How did you come across your favorite artist?

If you can remember.....how did you come across your favorite artist and what sold you on him/her

Actually, I give my mom credit for this. She loves music and has a great collection of records and CDs. My favorite artist is a tossup but some days I'd like to say Dave Matthews, who is also my mom's favorite. So there you go. Music can be in the family.

Also, live shows play a key role in my list. I never liked Justin Timberlake, Sting, or Madonna really until I saw them live. So that helps also -- live shows bring out something special and introduce you to new music, or not. In the prior case I'm usually hooked.

My friend got me hooked on Frank Zappa initially, which led me to explore his other albums, including Bongo Fury with Captain Beefheart. I decided to check out Beefheart's music outside of Zappa and after taking several listens to "get" his style, I've been loving his music ever since.

EDIT: Just noticed what forum this was in, do you mean albums in general or just rap/hip hop albums?

When Notorious the movie came out, my dad got the soundtrack. I was probably like 12 or 13 at the time. There was this one track i really loved, not even because of biggie, it was the people featured and It was Bone Thugs N Harmony. I listened to East 1999 Eternal after and since then they have been my favorites

Being that Eminem is one of my top artists, I'll share my discovery of The Slim Shady Lp.

I had been hearing a few cars go around blasting this retarded song or so I thought at the time "My name is". I thought this song was the end of rap, I couldn't get into it. I mean everywhere you went people were blasting it, black/white it didn't matter. This went on for months and I had even looked at the little video he put with it and I thought "Garbage". To make a long story short- One day, my boy Dave had me listen to his LP on New Years Eve leading into 2000, but the first track he played was "Rock Bottom" and I said OMFG..lol I was like why the heck didn't he come out with this first! Once I heard that track, I was like "Dude can actually rap" and the level of skill he had was mind-blowin at that time. I followed that up with "Bad meets Evil" and you already know how awesome that track is. So from that day on, I was and still am an Eminem fan. Let's just say when the Marshall Mathers LP came out around May 2000, I was at target first thing in the morning ready for the second greatest album of all time.

Welcome to the forum bro, nice post. I was like you at first, didn't rate My Name Is. The first track I liked of his was The Real Slim Shady (I would have been 10-11). Then I bought that single then got the album the month it came out. You would have to have been a kid then to understand how much of an effect that album had. Controversy galore, and of course then there wasn't really a successful white rapper. Beastie Boys did it I suppose but they were a group and quite Rock n Roll with it. You really did have to "be there" in my opinion to appreciate the impact Eminem had at that time. So many other white rappers started biting his style after that.

Wu Tangs 36 Chambers really got me into hip hop as a whole when I first heard it. I remember it so vividly, i was like 14 and mostly listened to reggae and old school rock, just never had an ear for hip hop. So anyway, I was chillin with my buddy and he was like you gotta hear this man!! We listened to the whole thing all in a row and my mind was blown. Instant fan after that moment, of Wu and hip hop in general.

Tupac and the only reason is because the school I was at EVERYBODY was listening to him and they lent me a cd.

I was listening to Wheatus on Spotify, and I found a song which they played in with MC Lars, which is now my favourite hip-hop artist.

The Weeknd is my favorite artist and I heard him on Drake's album Take Care.He was on the track Crew Love which I loved.I really thought he had really dope vocal abilities so I researched him on wikipedia and google and saw all these good things about him.I eventually read about his mixtape House of Balloons and decided to listen to it.Listening to that mixtape defintely sold me into his music.

It may sounds funny to most people but my first taste in hip-hop was MC Hammer - Can't Touch This! I was like 5 years old at that time and my mom was always listening to Yo! MTV Raps and sh-t just got me. Later on when I had some english knowledge (I'm from Hungary) I was on 2Pac's music real bad! My first CD from him was a gift to my birthday and from that moment of my life, I'm on hip-hop. I was always listening this type of a music BUT not because of the delivery, more because of the dance. Poppin, lockin, bboyin, you know but 2Pac showed me the lyrical side! 2Pac was and will be my all time favourite. Novadays, I listen to a lot of trap songs. It might be a bad idea to mention "trap" as hip-hop but just as Prodigy said in one of his video interviews: "hip-hop is about being happy, sad or whatever feelings you have" and that's true. Back then, people thought we are crazy because of wearing baggy jeans and stuff and now we looking at the guys with skinny jeans, like what the hell is wrong with you...haha times are changing but hip-hop is forever wether it's from NY, LA or ATL it's all the same!

Heard songs like "Money", "Another Brick in the Wall Pt. 2", "Hey You", "Welcome to the Machine" and the rest of their radio hits. I always liked the different sound they had, it was rock with something extra. At this time, I was completely uninformed about anything pertaining to music, didn't own one album. Time progressed, I got into more genres, more bands, and started to love music altogether. Fast forward to about two or three years ago, I heard Meddle, and was absolutely stunned by the music, I had never really heard something like "Echoes", an epic 20+ minute song, I forever will get the same feeling as the first time I heard it, same with "Fearless" and the section with Liverpool fans singing "Never Walk Alone", I find it so pure, the best music I have heard. I then heard Animals, sure enough, fell in love, watched the Pulse live DVD (on mushrooms), which is when they became my favorite band. That experience is one of my favorites, only because it's the closest thing I will get to experiencing them live. It was so powerful and overwhelming, I connected with the songs on another level, understanding the point they are trying to make about clichés of life, harsh realities, the cycles, the worst it has to offer, and the beauty of it. I have close to every album, unreleased tracks, bootlegs, documentaries, anything about the band I want to know. No question my favorite band. It sucks that a vast majority of people don't go beyond the Dark Side of the Moon, it's a legendary album, but there is much more they have to offer. It makes me extremely sad they may never get back together to play a show, but I want to see at least one of the members live before I die, then and only then I could truly die happy. Few have come close to having such a big impact on me musically,

Surprisingly enough Aiden is my favorite since Taste of Chaoes 2006 in WI. I was hanging near the back of the room when some other artist was on, having a drink with this weird dude in eyeliner and just shooting the ****. The band finished and made a little quick intro saying "Up next, its ****ing Aiden" and he looked at me, downed his drink and goes "well **** here we go" and walked off. Fell in love with the music, and the band members are just wicked, they hit the crowb mosh and hang out while other bands play, great tunes and great dudes.
