Nas is one of the most skillful MC's imo, but even if you don't think he is, that particular album is flawless.
I also don't understand how the production is average? What makes it average? It is quintessential, New York, 90's Hip-Hop. |

On Illmatic, Nas's mic skills conjure Rakim and Big Daddy Kane but made that straight-forward, flawlessly rhythmic, hard-hitting MC style a little more modern (for the early-90s). And, Goofle, you consider DJ Premier, Pete Rock, Large Professor, and Q-tip to be only average producers? For shame. Yes, Illmatic is worthy of its hype.

To revert back to my initial post, I was talking in general. But I don't actually think the production Illmatic is that great. And I don't care who he "conjures", he's just okay to me.
Still, I enjoy most of his albums.

The question was specifically about Illmatic, though. The production on it is great. And you really should care about the MCs that inspired him because they're also great.
