Illmatic - is it worth the hype?
Well is it?
I think it is. It's flawless. |
No. Nas is a pretty standard MC with average production.
|
Nas is one of the most skillful MC's imo, but even if you don't think he is, that particular album is flawless.
I also don't understand how the production is average? What makes it average? It is quintessential, New York, 90's Hip-Hop. |
Yes, of course it is.
|
Illmatic is his best, but his lyrics and rap style seem generic and bores me into a yawn.
|
He's just okay.

On Illmatic, Nas's mic skills conjure Rakim and Big Daddy Kane but made that straight-forward, flawlessly rhythmic, hard-hitting MC style a little more modern (for the early-90s). And, Goofle, you consider DJ Premier, Pete Rock, Large Professor, and Q-tip to be only average producers? For shame. Yes, Illmatic is worthy of its hype. |
To revert back to my initial post, I was talking in general. But I don't actually think the production Illmatic is that great. And I don't care who he "conjures", he's just okay to me.
Still, I enjoy most of his albums. |

I shouldn't care at all. Is he good? Yes. Do I consider him great? Nope.
And as I said, I think the production is good, nothing special. |
