He was using technology from 2011 opposed to what was available to Nas and his production scene in 92/93, and to make what was supposed to be a hardcore NY hip-hop record they weren't going to go all out with flashy production. That wasn't the aim of the album it centred more upon lyrics and story.
So faulting Illmatic because of production is like faulting a Godspeed You! record for its vocals. |

I understand. I meant that the significance really goes back to the actual people who were employing said samples, and had been for quite a few years at that point, not Nas himself.
