not gonna lie i do judge all you people who don't rate illmatic
i think you don't get 90's east coast hip hop that well if you don't at least like illmatic but i'm not one of those who gets mad if you don't rate it among the top ten albums or whatever i remember the first time i heard it it sounded boring as **** to me i developed a taste over time for minimalist dark hip hop beats laced with sick verses open question to anyone who doesn't feel illmatic: what do you think of mobb deep - the infamous? black moon - enta da stage? smif n wessun - dah shinin? organized konfusion - stress? obviously pick and choose any of the above that you've heard/have a comment on... i don't need everyone to rate every album Last edited by John Wilkes Booth; 03-08-2015 at 08:04 PM. |

alright lemme be a bit more specific with you
what do you think of this track? edit: let me note - you need to blast this kind of **** to enjoy it. if you're gonna listen to it at a low volume then even i would find it boring Last edited by John Wilkes Booth; 03-08-2015 at 08:22 PM. |

alright. i'll respect that cause it's honest
this is how i see it the beat is dark as ****, sets the perfect tone for some hardcore east coast projects type rap tales the lyrics are similar to the beats in that they don't try too hard to come up with witty one liners or any **** like that they just keep it focused on the main theme which is basically a sort of nihilistic version of thug life. bragging the **** too as part of his armor yet you can hear the undertones of pain because he doesn't dress it up and try to make it pretty i mean what better way to open a song about street life than this: Quote:

there was a while that i thought it was written was better tbh. the more i started to obsess over the early 90's ny sound the better illmatic's production started to sound to me
and i don't really consider myself a nas fan either. to me a nas fan is someone who rates mediocre albums like hhid and street's disciple and believes that nas actually sonned jay-z |
