It's relative to the music. Some music isn't lyric based. You wouldn't listen to Post Rock for lyrics for example.
I just realised I'm in the Hip-Hop forum. Well yeah Hip-Hop is all about the narrative so they're very important bar a couple of exceptions. |

If the beats are really cool I'll look past the lyrics for a long time before I try to find more great things within the songs. Generally, with hip hop, this lyrical focus comes earlier because I know that it's a huge part of the song, though.

I would say "yes" in Hip Hop (generally) but not so much in most other genres.

depends to me. They are what i look for first but I do like some rappers who suck at lyrics but have good flow combined with produciton that isnt generic. like Asaps mixtape last year and some Lil B. I also like really good ignorant music like some Chief Keef, but other than that i tend to stick with lyricist

I can live without great lyrics, I just view it as a nice bonus if they're particularly good. Sometimes the lyrics can kill a song/album for me. One example would be Masters of the Universe by Binary Star. I loved the production, but it seemed to me like nearly all of the lyrics were just them bragging about how underground they were and it rubbed me the wrong way.

^ That song is different, when i normally say this i normally say that Hooker at the point is a song that actually had a meaning behind it and a topic thats why its one of my favs. But when you listen to Rare Chandeliers I want to know what topics there is
I know exactly where your coming from, but im just saying i need more than a few tracks with substance from him. btw i do love him as an artsut he is in my current top 5 so when i said no subsance i am obviously over exagerating BUT you have to admit, most of the topics he raps about on his song is random |
