It's relative to the music. Some music isn't lyric based. You wouldn't listen to Post Rock for lyrics for example.

I just realised I'm in the Hip-Hop forum. Well yeah Hip-Hop is all about the narrative so they're very important bar a couple of exceptions.

If the beats are really cool I'll look past the lyrics for a long time before I try to find more great things within the songs. Generally, with hip hop, this lyrical focus comes earlier because I know that it's a huge part of the song, though.

I would say "yes" in Hip Hop (generally) but not so much in most other genres.

depends to me. They are what i look for first but I do like some rappers who suck at lyrics but have good flow combined with produciton that isnt generic. like Asaps mixtape last year and some Lil B. I also like really good ignorant music like some Chief Keef, but other than that i tend to stick with lyricist

I can live without great lyrics, I just view it as a nice bonus if they're particularly good. Sometimes the lyrics can kill a song/album for me. One example would be Masters of the Universe by Binary Star. I loved the production, but it seemed to me like nearly all of the lyrics were just them bragging about how underground they were and it rubbed me the wrong way.

i notice you been saying this a lot, i think your off base.

Quote:
Yo my mind is locked up, my conscious rocked up
In an alley with a fiend getting his cocked sucked
And she wearing a wedding dress a special day
She said she finally met a man to take her breath away
Well naturally I'm jealous, because I'm lonely
At times my only friends in life are drugs and the cannoli
My dad was right I shoulda listened when he told me
A walking contradiction wounds inflicted on me solely
Pain within running deeper than the ocean floor
Bluh bluh bluh bluh bluh bluh yo

Pain within running deeper than the ocean floor
Ocean avenue, the family straight from Kosovo
That was years ago mum look how your son has bloomed
I hum a tune and then I'm hotter than the sun in june
And I'm just living my life but feel I'm drifting
Demons on the doorstep, lungs that feel constricted
Or maybe I should see a shrink and get prescripted
Or take the hand of God but **** I think ill keep my distance
I think I'm frightened and I didn't even know it
But yo, that was a thought and I'm subconsciously a poet
This **** is perfect timing and I hope that I don't blow it
I pop the bottle of the moet, yo, heres to me
lots a stuff like this if you pay attention, not coming at you, just trying to to show u where im coming from

^ That song is different, when i normally say this i normally say that Hooker at the point is a song that actually had a meaning behind it and a topic thats why its one of my favs. But when you listen to Rare Chandeliers I want to know what topics there is

I know exactly where your coming from, but im just saying i need more than a few tracks with substance from him. btw i do love him as an artsut he is in my current top 5

so when i said no subsance i am obviously over exagerating BUT you have to admit, most of the topics he raps about on his song is random

yeah but i feel like thats true about most rappers. But yeah i wish he had more stuff like that, right now i wish his beats were more consistent. Some good ones, a lot of boring ones.
