Default I dont hate rap. I just hate what its become these days.

I have always been more into my rock music but I was really into hip hop at one point in my life. Back in the days, there were a lot of artistic rappers, ones that could be considered lyrical geniuses. Sure, every now and then, they would released a song talking about bitches and money and bling. But nowadays, that seems like all it ever is. Are there actually any decent, proper rappers out there these days that actually make songs about things that are meaningful?

Also, one thing that also bugs me is in every hip hop songs these days, they are saying something along the lines of, "Vegas to New York to Ibiza" etc. They always name places they have been or are going. Its so unoriginal.

There are more technically skilled rappers out there right now than any other period in recorded history. True fact bro. You just need to... erm... look for them.

This. It's amazing to me how often I hear someone say something like in the OP when they're just basing it off whatever they hear on the radio.

It depends on what rap music you are speaking about. If you are speaking about Mainstream Rap, well it is a major ass joke. But if you are talking underground rap music, well it is still good. But American Rap Music was at its best back in the 1990s up the mid 2000s when it had rappers like Ice Cube, Snoop Dogg, Tupac, Biggie Smalls, Pimp C, and other rappers at the time. It had great songs. I love Ice Cube. His music is one of the best. Also don't forget about Nas, Nas is the best rapper of his age. Nas is so unique.

Rap works like any other genre in that you can apply the word "terrible" to about 90% to it, but the 10% that's good is worth searching through the rest of it to find. I haven't heard of all the artists Goofle mentioned but the ones I have are very good. I would also namedrop Immortal Technique (he's fairly political which you may not be into but few people can match his lyrical quality) and Jedi Mind Tricks.

Check out any rapper that signed for Def Jux, it's pretty much THE alt hip-hop label.

Also, you could try some stuff by Death Grips, it's not meant for everyone but you might luv em, dunno.
