I tried really hard to like this album because it came out around the same time as Busdriver's latest abomination and just wanted something that was hip hop and that I could enjoy. I found I ran into the same problem I did with the Das Racist mixtapes and that they're just too long and too filled with filler that I found it really hard to focus on anything and it became background noise. The only song I can really remember with any great clarity is "NYC Cops" and that's because of the heavy subject matter and absolute insane amount of research that went into writing it. I probably need to go back and give it more time to fully sink in, but with the length I find it kind of hard to want to go back. I dunno... maybe that group just isn't for me.

I have to listen to this again to be sure, but all I remember from the first spin is that the production was good and the rapping mediocre.

I definitely do recall being impressed by the production so I will give the album that at least.

I really like this song.

Quote:
Life isn’t all
Haha hee hee hee hee (X10)
Koi jawab Mohamed Jawad (900)
Abdul Samad (911)
Abd al Razak
Shams (783) and Assad and Naqib Ullah
All take the fall cause DC loves that ma-ma-moola
Mohammed el Qarani (Number 269)
Yasser Talal Al Zahrani (Number 093)
Yussef Mohammed Mubarak al Shihri
Guantanamo ID 114 (114), Clearly
Number 132 (132), Abdul Salam Ghetan Al-Shehri
Getting them all, killed and then buried
Himanshu actually has a lot of great stuff to say

In response to critical reception of his album relax on "you have to ride the wave"

Quote:
I'm in a silk robe at the bank copping CDs
With guap that I made by selling these CDs
And guap that I saved by having a great CD
Yo yo yo yo yo, that's a Curriculum Vitae
I could always say, "I did it my way."
He addresses being considered a subpar rapper

Quote:
Trying to make money like white people, and
Learn how to be figurative, less literal
Hyper literate, hyper referential
Rap too minimal
Trying to write for The Guardian about Pakistani generals
Quote:
They say I act white, but sound black
But act black, but sound white
But what's my sound bite supposed to sound like?
I think I sound aight
I sound tight
Ayo, don't worry bout how I sound aight?
How he portrays justifying drug addiction/quick turnaround is genuine.
Quote:
I can't drink as much
Stop smoking blunts
Don't split the dutch
Think I'll quit the drugs
Kicked to the curb, too much
You on whose nuts?
Still puff the herb
Dorothy & Herb, get my art collection up
Still can drink a little
Poor myself another cup
Obviously i really like this dude and probably take him a bit too seriously. I don't think he's going to be an underground staple, but i think he provided a refreshing voice for a while.

Mike Finito is a great producer. Love the indian voice loops and how fast all his rhythms are. If you listen carefully he provides background voices for all of heems tracks almost which really help the verses sound better.

Really, really like this album. Why? I don't know. I don't know why I like anything to be honest.

Yes yes yes yes.

I will post my thoughts later (probably just edit this post) but I can tell you that I love this album (4th on my RYM Album of the Year list I reckon), and like CanwllCorfe, it's not easy to explain that love.
