Ab-Soul-Control System
Damn this album is good.. Lyrical, raw and catchy as hell. Check it out!
|
I'm planning on writing up a full review here in a bit.
|
Underwhelming rapper to me but I'm genuinely enjoying the feel of the album. He's charismatic, and is good at changing the inflections, but rarely says anything that puts a grin on the face or changes my perception.
Very similar to school boy q in terms of themes but thankfully less party boy-ish. As standard with black hippy the production is great. |
I enjoyed this album a great deal more than Q's offering, which I felt was the same stupid **** about how G he apparently is, and how he likes nothing more than bitches and dollars.
Although, that being said there wasn't much on Control System that stood out, I shall need to re-visit it and see if my perspective changes. These guys are both still lightyears behind Kendrick though. |
Certainly way behind Kendrick. Completely boring album, that bordered on bad actually.
|
I also liked this a lot better than Schoolboy Q's last, although some of the beats on Habits and Contradictions are pretty damn awesome (ala hands on the wheel). I haven't really been too impressed with what I've heard from Kendrick but I've never delved too deeply into his stuff, any recomendations for a good album to start with? Are Section.80 and Overly Dedicated his only full albums?
Regarding Control System, I agree in a sense that there's not a lot new but it does seem like he has the potential to grow in the future, Pineal Gland is a fairly unique, orignal track imo. Terrorist Threats is also great, reminded me a little bit of Public Enemy in some ways. Like you said though (Sparky) the feel of the album is really awesome, I think that's what got me excited in the first place but after a few more listens I'm a little less impressed by each track itself. Still my favorite Black Hippy release so far though. |
Section 8.0 is his first studio album, I believe OD is just a mixtape.
Really, listen to Section 8.0 it's miles beyond what his homies have brought out. Just throwing it in the there, on further evaluation, Habits and Contradictions may be the worst album of the year in my opinion. |

worst album of the year, really?
Nothing else was worse |
It is gash, but there's many worse albums.
|
the production on it alone makes it at least an average record, the way the beat drops in this is sick
youuuuuu better watch yo self |
Man, I expected more. He is so bad it was hard to hear, the only positives came from the other MC's who dropped verses.
|
I expect nothing, never been a fan of his.
|
you have to keep it in perspective though, there is always crap like this being released
i kinda like this song though **** these infectious noises |
I feel like the big boss listening to that.
I'll rephrase. Habits and contradictions is the worst album I have heard this year. Btw, how do any of these guys have a deal? |
|
Idk what you guys are talking about it being a bad album. Although everyone is entitled to their opinion I would have to strongly disagree with you guys. The album was great. Terrorist threats, bohemian grove, double standards...all great tracks
|
thats cuz ur a lupe fan cmon bro
|
It is pretty tight though.
|
haha that was a drunk ass post
i like the album too he has one great verse Quote:
|
I think all four members of Black Hippy have great potential. Kendrick's on fire, so he overshadow's Ab-Soul's genius. Rock is a boss and I hope he puts out new **** soon. Q puts out the worst releases of the group but some of his songs (Hands On The Wheel) are tight as hell, so he'll find a lot of commercial success.
|
lol, it's terribly average.
|
you're tripping Goofle
|
Please explain how this mediocre album isn't exactly that?
|
start with the production
and Ab-Soul has a great, great sounding voice with real presence and serious charisma |
inclined to agree with my man Goofle.
nothing about this album screamed 'charisma' or even vaguely interesting. It didn't really leave an impression at all. |
Ab-Soul bores me. Worse rappers keep me entertained through charisma, he has none.

I'm a huge black hippy / TDE fan so initially listening to it I was disappointed. Not one song really grabbed my attention and brought me in. I took it off the playlist in my ipod for a month or so and then came back to it. Upon coming back to it and listening (not just looking for a "banger") I realized how great Soul's lyricism was.
This line for instance... "I'm light years ahead, I'm bright and I like to get oral sex" at first glance says he's just smart and likes head. Look at the beggining and end of each line though. Light and bright reflect the same thing, ahead and oral sex again referencing the same thing. That wasn't on accident. Another one of his songs "Book of Soul" and the line here... Ironic we always had the same classes I copied off your work, and you ain't always had The right answers but it worked, mama, thanks a lot Probably wouldn't have graduated had you not He's talking about his gf at the time, Alori Joh (now deceased who K. Dot had also worked with) who despite being from different social classes (geek/popular) she finally noticed him as a person and gave him a chance and despite them not being the smartest, or wealthiest they got by... Ab has lyrics for days and can rap circles around Jay Z (he even claims it in a song...) you just can't look at the surface for them. |
nice ... an Ab Soul thread... thought id have to create one
