Toony TuneS & Mr. Mockwell
They only have one really short album, Conducted Sounds of Drama, along with a remix of it, but I'm really liking it. Really cool Madvillainy types of beats, and Toony TuneS, while he doesn't say anything very impressive, has a style that I really dig.

Dude this is really dope. The beats are really amplified. Definitively hear some clear j dilla influences, always good.
His rapping is cool, uses a lot of neat effects on his voice. He has an effective presence on the beats, it sounds like a mix of tyler the creator and one of the dudes from cool kids. Last song was my favorite. Really ominous vibe. Beat really hits hard without a lot of clear sounds, many distorted white noises. |
This sister nancy "bam bam" sample has been used to death, this track still bangs though. thought the pizza interlude at the end was kinda cheesy |
Yeah man, they're nothing special, but I'm loving the beats. And Toony TuneS definitely has that "cool" vibe going for him. Interesting that you mentioned OF, as I was thinking the same thing. It's tough to place it though, I almost see comparisons at different times to Tyler, Hodgy, and even a bit of Left Brain when he spits.
If you go to his main page (on tumblr) the first thing you see are pictures of a shopped Madvillainy album cover and an MF DOOM mask, so you know he's got the right influences haha. |
I like this stuff. These beats are mad dope.

So i've listened to this enough times to feel confident formulating a definite opinion.
lol thats a funny sentence when read back Anywho, I'd say this release is very promising, if a bit amateurish. The lyrics left a lot to be desired. Tooney has great flow and wittiness, but has occasional moments where what he spits is simply lazy. In "CSOD" for example, he spits: Quote:
The production is really good. The beats aren't always though. It's an odd juxtaposition. "The Krafty Ones" sounds great, but a lot of the beats are very generic, but it's being masked by a lot of superficial effects and multiple vocal layers. The Mixing (which was handled by tooney) sounds superb, but Mr. Mockwell is only 13 years old according to the internet, which explains why the beats aren't more interesting. He's crazy good for 13 though wtf. Anyway I give this a SUPER PROMISING/10 |
I liked this. Fit nicely between MF Doom and the new Big K.R.I.T. Mix Tape on my playlist.
|
WTF 13??? Really? Wow, I had no idea. That's very impressive for a 13 year old lol. Do you know how old Toony is?

Pretty insane really. He must already be signed to a record label or something to be using that quality sounding equipment.
@thomyorke I have no idea, the article i read compared him to the likes of oddfuture (he's from the same bay area) so I'm guessing their age, maybe older going by his lyrics |

your right
i always figured they were from the same area as kreayshawn and lil b. |
Looking him up in interviews there's no way in hell Toony's even close to 13. I'd assume he's late teens, which makes it interesting that he chose a 13 year old to produce for him.
From what I've seen of him Toony is hilarious though. He's like a chill version of Tyler. |
Damn, this kid is sick. Just released an album last week and it sounds like a lot of Flying Lotus' stuff. He's 14 now though. He had a Part I for this last November that I'll have to check out.
I could only find a couple tracks on Soundcloud to sample. He's 14 and he's one of the better madlib impersonators out there. His sound is going to mature so fast. I wonder why he isn't getting more attention yet. |
I have posted it up on Twitter, but yeah, he has like 150 followers and nobody seems to know who he is.
I liked the album, but I think it's pretty average really. Still, pretty good considering his age, and that collab with Toony TuneS is very promising indeed. |
Wow. It is incredible to know at that age he can already create music like that. Sparky is right he might be born to be a record artist. At that young age he could learn more and improve a lot.

^It's nice to see a new member who doesn't JUST spam.
Anyone listened to the remix? It's kind of hit and miss, but some of the tracks I really like: Smooth Bliss, What Are We, 90s Slag, It's About to Go Down, Thank You. Really cool to see the Quasimoto touch he puts on 90s Slag to go along with that sweet bassline. |
