Kanye west is still part of the average. Just because he is a stand out in today's mainstream **** does not mean he measures up to classic hip hop artsits. Just because his production team is killer does not mean he is. He is an okay lyricist, but his delivery and flow are pretty meh to me.
you do know that he does most, if not all of the production work on his albums, right? not to mention that before his solo debut he produced not only single tracks but entire albums for artists like Jay-Z, Alicia Keys, and Ludacris.
i can understand not liking his rapping/lyricism, but to say that he's not talented at all just isn't true.

Please point out where I said he was not talented at all.
Oh wikipedia as a source lmao.
I took a look at that btw and I did not see him producing entire albums for them.

my mistake on the entire albums thing; but surely, being active for that many years on that many different artists' work must say something about his production talent.
i know you didn't say he wasn't talented at all, i was just making a point. what you did say though is

so doesn't that mean you just said he was killer, aka above average? ;)
and by "stand up to classic hip-hop artists" do you only mean lyrically? cause for hip-hop music, isn't sound involved too?
also, sorry for the late reply, i just got up from a nap

longevity doesn't say anything about talent imo. You like putting words in people's mouths don't you? I clearly said he is average. Musically and lyrically he does not stand up to classic hip hop artists.

well that's like your opinion maaaaaan
even though imo it's a horrible one. Lyrically I agree but production/musically I think something is wrong in your head if you can't tell how great he is in that area.

alright, i stand corrected on what you said, that was my fault. still, i have to agree with what djchameleon says, musically he's got his own swagger and style, especially for a mainstream hip hop artist. the way i see it, while alot of his contemporaries may focus on making hits, Kanye's really a guy who focuses on making music. even the stuff that aren't released as singles you can tell that they still have the same amount of work and care put into it as much as his hits, and they're not all meant to be club-bangers or radio hits. you can tell by listening to his albums that he really enjoys making music.
a few examples
-yes, some of those were singles/hits, but they still show how far from alot of his other contemporaries he can be.
as for standing up to classic artists, lyrically i can agree to an extent, cause lyricism isn't his main strength, but music wise, that's more of a subjective thing, and since Kanye produces his own music, he has a bit of a leg-up if your just comparing him fully like that to rap heavyweights like Biggie or 2Pac. if your comparing him to past producers though, then once again that is subjective, and imo i think he has and will doing well to push the medium of hip-hop production forward. still, i respect your opinion if you think past producers are better.
one more thing, and i don't mean to sound patronizing, but how much of Kanye West's music have you heard, if i may ask?

Biggie and 2 Pac IMO are overrated and that is because of their deaths honestly haha. I have all his albums downloaded.
