I also think he's whack because he's about the most unoriginal MC out there but that's another matter

He may be uninspiring and unoriginal as a rapper, but I don't think anyone can deny that he is doing something rather unique to some extent - at least within the mainstream. Even if that comes down to the beats he chooses.

I just can't give him props when his whole style is borrowed though. Mellohype could have gotten famous for about the same exact reasons he did, if they conceded their style some for such a position. He pretty much brought what was already going on in the underground to the mainstream without any kind of true stamp of distinction, so i really can't be too lenient on him for that, though I suppose i should appreciate it more.
Plus, he rhymes like Wayne, albeit during his good period.

surrell you seem to be holding the same grudge as mellowhype with the "asapcopy" tweet.
I give asap rocky some credit with the hooks and the persona. He was a black JFK with lana. saying someone "rhymes like wayne" is representative of like 88% of all pop rap |

I am but i don't think it's been invalidated yet.
Basically what i'm saying is if he isn't anything special, why is he being treated like he is?

thats how i feel about freddie gibbs and a lot of people. It just happens i guess.
It must have to do with his image, i don't think he would have blown up as fast without the peso video and all that even if they were fairly uninspired. |

Purple Swag did have a sharp video too. I mean, he has the nice beats, he has the hooks like you mentioned, so he definitely has mainstream appeal, so as a pop rapper, he's fine. But people just yap up a storm about him and it gets my feathers all ruffled. I'm probably worked up about nothing; Hodgy isn't an extraordinary lyricist, I've known that from the get go. He is, however, a remarkably flexible MC, much like Kendrick Lamaar, in my opinion.
But back to Rocky, I listened to the album again, and I hate it less. He made a good choice in keeping it short and concise. If he had gone sixteen tracks again (+ or -) it would've dug its own grave, but being shorter it only drags through the pretty short midsection. The first three tracks are sharp enough, as everyone said, and "Suddenly" had a nice, Ghostface like moment which is always a plus for me, but he still maintained his own style on it. So, like, a five or something.
