You really think that?
Damn, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill with those dumb classroom skits, where the teacher's all like 'What is love' and some homegirl's all like 'uh uh' as some homeboy cracks wise with his dawgs. That was some dumb shit. The worst one for dumb cutaways was Ready to Die, but the more I listened to GKMC, the more I appreciated the significance of the answer machine messages and the part they played in the story. They aren't just there as segues.

I do honestly believe that. But then again, I've been scrutinized in this forum because I don't like so called hip-hop classics like 'A Nation of Millions' '36 Chambers' and 'Ready to Die' so for me GKMC's easily better than the others.

Well I don't like it because it does literally nothing new or special. It's a cautionary tale just as Ice Cube told twenty years ago, it's got production steeped either in that period or new "trap" fads and is also boring, the lyricism isn't engaging, his voice is annoying, AND it was more overhyped than Kanye and A$AP combined. The best thing he has going for him is that he's flexible in his style, but that's about it. Frank Ocean had the best album of last year hands down, he told an engaging, unique narrative with a truly great production, but he got passed over because nobody digs R&B anymore. Also, Grizzly Bear were way better, AC were way better, and Neil Young will always own Kendrick but not in a racist way.

There's no way Ice Cube and Kendrick's stories are similar. Ice Cube was a gimmick, he was the Rick Ross of his time albeit with far superior skills, but there was little truth in his stories. Kendrick's honest and comes across as self effacing.

The production's boring? You're kidding me, in my eyes the layering and depth of the production is some of the finest we've been treated to in recent times. There are sounds inside of sounds and everything comes perfectly together, nothing's overbearing, nothing's minimalistic, as Radiohead said everything's in it's right place.

I liked Channel ORANGE as well, but it's went the opposite way with me over time (Initially loved it, went to just liking it) I mean aside from the sublime Pyramids which is far and away the greatest individual track of last year, Lost and Pink Matter -mainly Andre 3k's verse- ; the rest is good, but not great. Do you honestly believe that Super Rich Kids is more lyrically engaging and tells a better story than Money Trees. Or that Sweet Life resonates more with you on a level of relevance and relatability in terms of storytelling and narrative than Swimming Pools? I struggle to believe that.

As for Channel ORANGE getting passed over?!?

Best albums of 2012, No 1: Frank Ocean

Don't know where you're getting that from Surrell, R&B's is the most important and significant it's been since MJ in his prime, due in part to the likes of Frank Ocean, The Weeknd, Jeremih, Miguel etc. It's undergone a complete resurgence so to dismiss it as nobody caring is lunacy.

The Grizzly Bear album doesn't do much to me, I don't find it particularly engaging and I'm not a big fan of the pretentious indie scene. As for Neil Young I haven't listened to any of his stuff since Harvest, so I can't comment. By the way my 2012 list looks something like this. (EDIT: Will post my RYM list later, the site seems to be down) Also, AC is who, my mind's gone blank.

Perhaps, in retrospect you just don't relate to Kendrick the way I do, perhaps he doesn't speak to me and thus you feel less of an emotional attachment to the album, just in the way that A Nation of Millions doesn't speak to me. But I don't get where people are getting 'boring' from, it's far from it. I think 'boring' is just a cop out answer to be honest.

I agree, I like the beats.

Channel ORANGE definitely wasn't overlooked. That's another album I intend to listen to based off the hype it received.

I'm always cautious about RnB though as it can be some of the most corny music going.

Naa man, R&B's had a complete overhaul in recent times. It's a whole different game. Channel ORANGE and The Weeknd's House of Balloons & Thursday are awesome.

I have heard some of The Weeknd's stuff but can't put any names to it, thought it was cringe though.

Listening through again now.

I totally disagree. GKMC was special in nearly every way, and the lyricism was completely engaging! Just look at Sing For Me I'm Dying of Thirst for your prime example. Effing brilliant.

Channel Orange was great and it definitely wasn't overlooked.
