Doomtree Album Discussion

Doomtree "Doomtree"

Quote:

Doomtree is a hip hop collective based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Members of Doomtree bring various bases of knowledge and musical backgrounds together to create alternative-influenced rap and hip-hop music. Nearly as prominent as the influence of hip-hop in their music is that of punk, and their lyrics are frequently introspective. They often do shows with fellow Minnesota hip-hop label Rhymesayers Entertainment. Emcees perform solo or with one another, each contributing a different approach to their music. Doomtree's self-released, self-titled debut album as a group was released on July 29, 2008.

They're a really awesome group, Wren and Drumsticks are my favourite songs by them.

Despite loving POS, Dessa and Cecil (to a lesser extent), I've never picked this up. Will do so now, and comment again in a while.

Cheers for the reminder - expecting good things.

Loved this album. The production has got a really nice alternative sound to it, and the beats often change up and tailor to the specific needs of the rappers, who are all incredibly varied.

P.O.S definitely lights up the tracks with his verses, as does Dessa. Sims actually has some really nice lines too.

Ok, as a preliminary impression, having given it a once over. It's a bit half baked.

It just feels like as a collective, Doomtree is less than the sum of its parts. The personalities don't shine through like they do on solo releases.

The production is good, although, I might be the only one but I often felt like the vocal tracks were a bit low in the mix.

I haven't really picked anything apart lyrically, except for The Wren, it was good - but not Dessa's best, I have nothing to hold Sims against, and he was solid but I think Doomtree can do better.

You know what, I think my only major complaint with the album is it's too long. As a whole it seems a bit strung out.

djchameleon 04-15-2011 05:08 AM

I didn't mind the length so much because I have listened to 60 track mixtapes.

This is my first time listening to Doomtree and I really appreciate the production. I feel like some of the rappers are so so and a bit weak at times but the production is what really kept me listening.

I love their use of old school beats

Dots and Dashes, Accident and Twentyfourseven are my favorite tracks off this album so far. I still have about 5 more tracks to go.

I liked this album way more than I thought would. The production across the whole album was consistently entertaining and the rapping was never bad, though it was never exceptional either. Overall a better than average album.

So Sick

They did a Really good job on this album, I love Mike McTlans track GAME OVER, BIG BOSS KOOPA, so sick, and POS is just amazing, SIMS pissed me off a lot at first but I kinda dig him now, dessa's a goddess, and Cecil's okay, that travelling dunk tank song was dope.

No Kings is a dope album. Loving the hell out of it at the moment. Not heard the s/t.
