Mac Miller

What's everyone's opinion on this guy? I'm not usually into stuff like his but it gets played a lot around here (pittsburgh) since he's from here. I would usually dismiss anything of the sort but I do like some of his songs but I definitely think he needs to be brought back down to earth. I think he jsut turned 19 and just put out a new mixtape called Best Day Ever a few days ago which I'm not to fond of.

s_k 03-15-2011 04:55 PM

Whaha, that was strange.
One of my best friends is called "Marc Miller".
And I thought 'what the!?' for a while :D

Eitherway, I'm not into rap/hip-hop at all. But I seem to have heard worse.
The guy himself is a bit annoying though.

Dirty 03-15-2011 05:01 PM

I've heard a few songs, probably not enough to really form a solid opinion, but from what I've heard I didn't particularly like. Wiz Khalifa wannabe but less black with less swag. Sounds just like stoner rap to me, which bores me and gets old quick. Just like Wiz does.

Thom Yorke 03-15-2011 05:09 PM

I haven't heard many songs, but I don't like him at all from the ones I've heard.

Sparky 03-16-2011 02:20 PM

super trash. Just like dirty said, he's pretty much white wiz lite, for the suburban bro's.

He's a stoner because thats the latest trend to hop on.

ReadyWhenCalled 03-16-2011 02:35 PM

There's a lot of buzz about this guy right now.. I wasn't sure about his first song, but when I listened to a few I gained a lot of respect for him, I think he's got some seerious talent!

Landon 03-16-2011 04:14 PM

His songs are very radio-friendly, I'm sure he'll hit the charts soon enough. He reminds me of Mike Posner.

Rage Against the Machine 03-16-2011 04:28 PM

He's not bad but a lot of people (see: bros) at my school worship him. it's just another white guy who smokes weed. Nothing extraordinary.

BTown 03-16-2011 04:31 PM

I wouldn't say he has talent or that I have respect for him but I really do like this beat.

He is such a ****y douchebag there. yeah bros at my school worship hm too. I think Wiz Khalifa is a whole lot worse.

djchameleon 03-17-2011 01:56 AM

He has potential in my books. Sure, he has some radio friendly tracks and he sounds like Wiz but I think him and Wiz are cool/friends. I will be looking forward to his future releases to see if he can clean up a bit of the areas where he is a bit weak.

I'm going to be doing a mini review of Best Day Ever in my Mixtape Weekly thread. I just listened to it yesterday finally.

This track was one of my favorites

What areas do you think he is weak in? I thought Best Day ever was awful, and "Wear My Hat" was embarassingly bad off of it. it had a sick beat though.

it's really just one area and that is his cadence/flow. Sometimes it sounds like he is tripping over words and going against the beat.

He has some awesome people making beats for him.

Antonio 03-20-2011 11:32 AM

listening to some of the songs here i thought he was eh, but then i saw his XXL Magazine Freshman 2011 Freestyle and his freestyle with some of the other 2011 Freshman. not amazing, but pretty good.

Mac starts about 1:00 in

Sparky 03-20-2011 03:00 PM

When is this period of self-promotion through obviously fake freestyles going to end. Why not call it something else? I don't mind the verses, just why even go through the bs of calling them freestyles.

I feel like Mac was coming off the top in the second video and Twist as well but everything else felt like it was written and they rehearsed that stuff.

Antonio 03-20-2011 09:33 PM

yeah, i think it's not too much of a secret that most of the freestyles in those vids are pre-written, but the thing with freestyles(or at least i'm told) is that a number of rappers use verses/lyrics that they couldn't use in any real songs, aka stuff like clever punchlines/cool sounding flows, whereas saying something "off the dome"(aka making up stuff on the spot) is something others choose to do.

idk, i usually rate freestyles on how clever the lyrics they made were/delivery instead of whether or not they can instantly have a snappy line(but if you can go off the dome well i have much respect for that), cause some guys might not be the quickest witted at that moment, but if given some time can have some really hot verses to show.

based off of that freshman cypher who did you like the best?

Antonio 03-21-2011 08:54 AM

based off of the cypher, i think Mac took the cake, although i'll have to watch it again to verify(can't do it now cause i'm in class, lol)

Imo, Diggy burned them all with Mac following up closely for the second spot.

well watching it again, i still think Mac, Diggy just sounded like he was going the motions while Mac was more animated with it. it could also be because of how long he went with his haha.

Pheens 03-28-2011 09:43 AM

i don't really like this guy ever. boring at best. doesn't say anything amazing. He's only gettin on bc of Wiz

Husky McDump 03-28-2011 02:55 PM

Mac Miller's material is amazing 25% of the time and the rest is pretty "meh" to me. I love some of the producers he is working with, I think his delivery is a carbon copy of all of the new wave "stoner" hip/hop that is out how a days. He's easy to listen to and it's much easier for someone being european-white to appreciate and rhyme along with the song due to the absence of the word "n * gger" (a word that I don't like to hear coming from any race of people) which is everywhere in the rap and hip-hop genre.

As far as his newest mix tape...

Donald Trump
Bonus (Best Day Ever Bonus Track)
All Around The World
Snooze
^bout the only ones worth listening to

And dude listen anyone listen to "Ill Be There"

Can you say "Yesterday" by Atmosphere...

DUDE! I said the exact same thing to my friends about him ripping off atmosphere!

Besides Donald Trump I think the only other decent track off Best Day Ever is Wake Up. I can not get over how bad "Wear My Hat" is. sick beat though.

Yeah, I was listening to Best Day Ever again today and 'Wear My Hat' just pisses me off. so awful.

He isn't too bad with rhyming off beat as I thought before.

but I have a perfect example to show you how it sounds when someone raps off beat.

Wayne is the only one that raps ON beat lol.

Juvenile is the worst offender of rapping OFF beat in this song.

Sparky 03-29-2011 06:44 PM

awful beat anyway

MaximumFlow 03-29-2011 10:17 PM

i'd say he's the second best white rapper ever, and possibly one of the best rappers alive. c'mon seriously look at who's out there right now.

this dude is straight up delusional.

He has no idea who is white that raps and is currently "out"

Bison11 03-31-2011 09:50 PM

Mac is ok. I wont go out of my way to listen to him, but the beats he uses are pretty good, so its not bad to listen to if you dont really care about lyrics, or just want to listen to something light and fun.

Husky McDump 04-06-2011 08:06 AM

best track off the Best Day Ever:

Its Chiddy Bang featuring Mac Miller. Pretty cool beat that Xaphoon Jones (one half of Chiddy Bang) made

cant post links until 15 posts though.

All Around the World is pretty sick but its pretty bad sampling from MSTRKRFT's Heartbreaker.

Idk it could have a little bit better production.

DoctorSoft 04-06-2011 04:04 PM

Only song I've really listened to is Kool Aid and Frozen Pizza. It's all right, but doesn't really make me want to check out more. Is that song one of his better ones or is it not up to his usual level?

I haven't heard of Kool Aid and Frozen Pizza but here is an okay one

I really like this one here(futuristic funk)

Thom Yorke 04-06-2011 09:30 PM

He's got some pretty good beats (which he doesn't make) but I honestly think he's pretty bush league when it comes to lyrics. His voice really annoys me for some reason as well.

his lyrics are poor 90% of the time.

this song has some good lyrics:

Hello death it seems that we meet again
You keep taking friends that I'll never see again
I guess they gotta leave, but if we pretend
That they never left, well we gonna see them then
Never leave our hearts, never leave our thoughts
As time goes by don't even be forgot
Life goes on, though I wish that they was there
**** like this aint never gonna seem fair, yeah
So can I have a moment of silence
For anyone who's gone from the coldness of violence
And I know you wanna see me go to college,
But I'm sorry I don't think ima make it
Cause this world is mine for the takin'
So when I get famous they gonna know what your name is
And no one understand what the pain is
And how the blood runs number where my veins is
I'd like to thank you, cause you made me a man
Told me to never let it go so I'm taking a stand
Always in the crowd when I played in the band
Your grandson is everything I say that I am
And maybe I am, a little bit over my head

Yeah his douchy voice really turns me off his music. He seems like a guy with little-mans syndrome to me.
