Lil Wayne, great, average, terrible?

Can someone explain to me why people think Wayne is so incredible? Someone said to me recently that the Carter 1 and 2 was "a huge influence on Hip Hop" When asked to elaborate on exactly how it influenced Hip Hop they couldn't.

So, can anyone on here tell me WHY he's considered to be so great? I feel he's extremely overrated, his songs are dull and simplistic. I don't understand why people think he's so skilled.

Don't get me wrong, if you enjoy him fair enough but at least be willing to admit he's actually a bad rapper. I like bad rappers, I love ludacris but I'd never say he's a brilliant rapper because he sucks technically despite making some catchy tracks.

SO... why is Lil Wayne so incredible? What is your opinion of him and feel free to vote in the poll.

Mods: I'm sure there'sa lil wayne thread already but don't close this, mines is different.... it has a poll.

Basically I think Wayne is an above average punchline type rapper. And that's about as far as it goes. I feel like he'd have more respect if he wasn't so hyped. But he's a black guy who looks cool and has swag, so of course he's hyped beyond belief. Never loved his stuff, but I don't think he's terrible. I used to but it was more of me just disliking how over rated I felt he was.

he is an above average punchline rapper but I respect his level of dedication. He is consistently in our faces with new material whether is be a mixtape, LP, featured on a track. If he happens to be featured on a track he definitely steals the spotlight from others or the person that actually has the track on their album. I respect his hustle and his grind when it comes to the music industry. Every once in awhile he releases a track that is truly deep and makes you think but you won't find any of those on his LPs, they are strictly in his mixtapes. The LPs are purely for catchy, hit maker singles that he knows will sell.

I need to listen to more of his mixtape stuff and older LPs. I do respect his dedication though, he puts in his work. Seems to me like he basically made a big name for himself by featuring on every track possible, seemed like he had a verse on everyone's song at one point. I didn't always feel the stuff he was putting out though, I feel like he just puts out pretty much everything. Like I think some verses or songs here and there could have been left on the cutting room floor. On one hand I can't blame him for being confident/****y and calling himself the best rapper. Cause he is making the most money and putting out the most hits and he's put in the work, but at the same time it just rubs me the wrong way cause anyone who listens to hip hop would probably agree he isn't the greatest rhymer. He's a funny and clever punchline guy.

I like Lil Wayne a lot. He's not a brilliant lyricist, but he just makes enjoyable songs with some great punchlines. His voice is pretty unique too, and that's definitely one of his defining features.

This is probably my favorite Lil Wayne tune...

most of the time i don't really care for him, but he'll throw a curveball like recently that 6'7 track went super hard.
