I Rip It Hardcore Like a Hip Hop Album Club

The general idea is to give a prog or fusion album as homework for each week. Then, every monday, a discussion thread is created for the album which was last week's homework assignment. Which album is the homework assignment is voted for in a 4 days poll which is constructed every thursday. Those who want to participate should suggest albums they would like considered for homework assignment and then that suggestion is included in the upcoming thursday poll.

In order to get people to vote for your suggested album, you should include a little information about it and perhaps some album art to pique people's interest!

Don't worry about committing yourself. You can join once, then never do it again or join every other week or whenever you want. You can vote, suggest and not discuss, anything goes.

I was thinking we'd skip the voting and people would just sign up to do an album. First come first served. To start things off...

Earl Sweatshirt "Earl"
http://static.rateyourmusic.com/albu...52/2998358.jpg
More of a rough demo than an album, 16 year old Earl Sweatshirt delivers a sick, funny and creative release (produced by Tyler, the Creator, also of Odd Future fame.) Many people have called him (and his Odd Future brethren) the future of hip hop, and with such talent at such a young age it's easy to see why.

PM me if you need assistance locating this album.

I'll give this dude a shot, if I can find his album. I've been hearing about this young crew. I don't think I'm going to care for it, but I'm open to try it before I make an opinion.

I think it's cool you throw up an album suggestion but we probably should stick to Tore's format or similar and throw up a poll for next album. Or we can piece it together first. Cuz I don't have Earl yet.

I'm going to be very active in this thread if it works. Or if it doesn't.

Guybrush 01-04-2011 01:52 AM

Cool to see another album club :) Hip hop is not my thing, but I might join in if I see something interesting. I really hope it works out, so good luck!

Dirty 01-04-2011 04:16 AM

I'll DL it and see what I think. Good idea for a thread. Hopefully more people get interested in doing this.

James 01-04-2011 11:53 AM

I'll be up for this one, although I like prog the club for it seems to never choose things I'm a big fan of. Downloading now.

someonecompletelyrandom 01-04-2011 11:56 AM

Downloading now. Can't wait to hear it.

Phantom Limb 01-04-2011 12:08 PM

I really dig this album. Everything sounds pretty rough, but dudes got nice flow and he says some pretty crazy stuff.

PS is it ok for me to post the link to the album download?

sleepy jack 01-04-2011 12:49 PM

I don't know how cool that is with the moderators anymore, I know we use to but got wicked paranoid about the RIAA. Anyway,

This album isn't as strong as Tyler, the Creator's release but it still holds a special place in my heart. Like abearmauledme said it's rough, but I have a special heart for lo-fi music and demos so that's part of the appeal to me. I think it's funny and at the same time very uncomfortable - which is something I like in music.

I'd rather run it in a way where all the clubbers sign up to suggest an album, that way it's a bit more fair to everyone because I think it'd be mad lame if someone ended up suggesting an album but never got there's picked. It'd make them want to quit, plus I think this would work better since there's less of us.

On that note who wants to sign up to post the next album?

Ey, I've fixed that by always including the album in every poll until it is picked :p:

Anyways, to Abearmauledme, no album download links on the forums please!

I'll post something if you want.

FaSho 01-04-2011 08:27 PM

I'll go third.

Also, the Earl album is sooooooooooooo good.

Mrd00d 01-04-2011 08:32 PM

Anybody that wants to participate must have like 10-100 albums they want to suggest, ya know. We really just gonna get in line, like I got fourth album? I'm kind of waiting to see what happens here at this point. Also, still need to grab EARL...

I should maybe run this more like yours. I didn't pay much attention and just went for it...and this is kinda messy D:

Does anyone else think I should just revamp this and we should start fresh or keep rocking it with Earl and then morph into it for next time? I'm impulsive, and not just about shopping and drugs apparently, but about internet album clubs.

djchameleon 01-05-2011 04:17 PM

yeah leave it the way it is for now with Earl then with the next one change it up a bit to what you wanted to

Guybrush 01-05-2011 04:23 PM

Don't worry about littering the forum with polls and stuff. I'll clean it up for you :)

Mrd00d 01-05-2011 08:52 PM

I'm in board with the club if we can all now suggest an album for next time, so that there can be a poll.

We should have a thread on the album Earl poppin' off by 1/10/11? As in, listen to it by then and do a mini-review? If that sounds fine.

My album suggestion for inclusion in the first poll is Panacea's first album, Ink Is My Drink, 2006.

If you need any help with the club, setting up the polls, or anything, let me know.

sleepy jack 01-05-2011 09:16 PM

idk i like the idea of taking turns suggesting an album. for two main reasons, one it means everyone gets their fair shake at it, and two, it means the responsibility is kinda shared. like, you sign up for your album, you post it and kinda moderate the discussion and so on. it makes it more community oriented.

Mrd00d 01-06-2011 03:33 AM

I think Tore's format barely works at keeping people interested and coming back. If there isn't a given structure and leader willing to basically keep everything going, it will probably fall apart. Any of these clubs need structure, leadership, and organization to keep moving unless all the posters involved are really passionate about the idea... Just my 2 cents.

So where are we gonna write about Earl? I'm going through it for the 2nd time now.

Guybrush 01-06-2011 05:33 AM

The way I do it is to keep doing it even when/if I'm the only participant :p: I think hip hop might interest more people than prog and fusion does though!

:stupid:

sleepyjack, are you gonna lead this thing? Cause if you dont want to or whatever, we should definitely appoint someone to kinda take charge of this.

I am kinda confused to... I am downloading the album now, will a thread be made to discuss this?

sleepy jack 01-06-2011 12:19 PM

I'll lead it and make the thread to discuss now, sorry. It was kinda being discussed in here so I thought what the hell.

Mrd00d 01-06-2011 05:03 PM

All right, phase one down. Now we need to choose which album is next, whether by poll or not I guess.

sleepy jack 01-06-2011 09:34 PM

I'll start up a poll. Everyone nominate shit.

someonecompletelyrandom 01-06-2011 10:32 PM

I want to nominate Doomtree's Self Titled.

Panacea (the US hip-hop group)

Panacea, comprised of producer K-Murdock and MC Raw Poetic, blend Native Tongues-inspired beats with warm major chords and soul samples and add smart, conscious rhymes about life, love, and of course, hip-hop. Their debut album ‘Ink Is My Drink’ released on Rawkus showed up in late 2006. Their sophmore album ‘The Scenic Route’ was released in 2007. Panacea is highly intertwined with Restoring Poetry in Music, which acts as their live band.

djchameleon 01-06-2011 11:36 PM

I'd like to nominate Chiddy Bang's The Preview

Phantom Limb 01-07-2011 11:03 AM

I nominate Viktor Vaughn's Vaudeville Villain.

James 01-07-2011 11:08 AM

I nominate Charizma And Peanut Butter Wolf's Big Shots

Bane of your existence 01-07-2011 11:17 AM

I'm glad I finally got motivated to check out that Earl Sweatshirt stuff. It's about what I expected, if not maybe a step up. Very interested on seeing how/if he progresses in the future, or if he falls for the trap and gets swept into a label before he's able.

I'd like to nominate Macklemore- The Language of My World

FaSho 01-07-2011 02:35 PM

I nominate Pomegranate by Astronautalis

Mrd00d 01-07-2011 05:17 PM

Poll needs to close today or tomorrow. We've got a solid bunch of suggestions. Hopefully someone will get more than one vote per album aka hopefully some more folks will join in on the club and vote, b/c it seems like everybody has a suggestion.
:tramp: Getting excited though :tramp:

sleepy jack 01-08-2011 12:48 AM

I'll do the poll on Sunday.

djchameleon 01-09-2011 11:30 AM

After the winner of the poll happens, next week do you do another poll with the rest of the nominations? or are new nominations placed?

sleepy jack 01-09-2011 02:50 PM

I guess add new nominations, but keep the old ones too.

V. VAUGHN THE TRAVELIN' VAUDEVILLE VILLAIN,
WHO DON'T GIVE A FLYIN' FUCK WHO AIN'T NOT FEELIN' HIM?

seconded.

Bane of your existence 01-14-2011 09:51 PM

New nomination: The Coup- Pick a Bigger Weapon.

Mrd00d 01-15-2011 09:18 AM

New nomination:

Magic Heart Genies - Heartifact

Upstart with freestyle pioneer and veteran Myka9 and relatively (more) unknown JtheSarge, rapping out of the pot capital of California, Humboldt. Infusing new ideas lyrically and production wise, this album is great for hip-hop heads interested in positivity, and relaxing with some good grass.

sleepy jack 01-16-2011 02:36 PM

Yaya, more noms. I like that you wrote a description too. In the future, I'm not going to require it, but it'd be awesome if people could do this because it looks nicer for the initial post and I haven't heard all of these so I can't do it myself.

Anyway, I'm posting the new poll tonight, so post some new nominations plz. I'll keep the old ones still.

djchameleon 01-21-2011 05:11 AM

new nomination

Rhymefest - El Che

Rhymefest, is an American hip hop artist from Chicago, Illinois. He co-wrote Kanye West's "Jesus Walks", which won a Grammy at the 47th Grammy Awards.
His album El Che is slightly a bit of a concept album which he plays out through some of the skits. He's pretty much playing a hip hop version of Che Guevara.

In this track, Prosperity. He takes aim at the commercialization of Faith.

I wanted to include this video because it's funny as hell

sleepy jack 01-22-2011 10:32 PM

I won't be on this week, so I hope there's no complaints that I'm going to make the second place album of last week's polls the album of the week this week. Sorry, I'll have the new nominations added when I'm back. Astronautalis' Pomegranate will be the next album.
