Ok, here's my top 11, order not set in stone:
1. Notorious BIG 2. Nas 3. Eminem 4. MF Doom 5. Tupac 6. Jay Z 7. Big Pun 8. Big L 9. Redman 10. Wutang 11. Rakim Some guys I didn't hear enough mention of(or none at all) on this post, but not necessarily the next in line: Kendrick Lamar, Hopsin, Apathy(and Demigodz), Vinnie Paz(Jedi Mind Tricks and AOTP), Watsky, and ASAP Rocky Some guys I personally don't like because I find flows cringeworthy, despite being lyrically strong: Andre 3000, Aesop |

I think Wu-Tang wins artist and group. I think they probably have the most lasting influence, along with Dre, and they managed to be crazy-prolific and still maintained a high level of quality. All of their studio albums are good, if not great and many of the individual solo albums are also amazingly consistent, given that there are nine guys here. I know there are some duds, but not that many compared to other groups. Even their most erratic member (ODB) managed to pump out two killer solo records. I would give it to the Wu over Dre too just because Dre hasn't released that much stuff since The Chronic. At least not compared to the Wu.

Tupac and Biggie are both overrated. It's a good thing they both died before people started figuring out what empty vessels they were. Biggie has a nice flow, but his content gets very repetitive very fast. I also think Puffy's production both helps and hurts him. There is a nice slick pop groove to a lot of Biggie's songs, but the way Puffy has to insert himself in every song with his little chants and asides gets annoying fast. I really like Biggie, I just don't think he is the be all and end all of rap.
Tupac is a tougher nut. The guy re-invented himself to become Thug Jesus, but it's hard to take him seriously, knowing he grew up in the Oakland Hills and went to Performance Arts school and all the rest. About as far removed from thug life as you can get. All his ridiculous misogynistic posturing was largely an act that I think he himself bought into. I enjoy some of his songs, but I find him kind of lightweight and not a particularly strong rapper, especially compared to some of the other, more serious minded brothers out there. I know. Blasphemy. So be it. |
