I still have a hard time wrapping my head around the love for NWA. It seems like some (or too many) people like them because of what and who they are associated with, rather than the music they made. Rarely do I hear anything about how 'I like their lyrics' or 'I like their beats' or any of the ways fans appreciate a rap group. I hear too much 'Oh! They have the n-word in their name!' and 'They sang about fucking the police!', or 'Dre was in that group!'.

I find their rapping to be average at best, the beats vanilla, the overall package package extremely boring and NWA sounding incredibly gimmicky. The lives the guys in the group left are hardcore and real, I won't deny that. But, NWA? A novelty act.

Maybe I'm just cynical, but I don't get it.

I think its indicative of the time period. Gangster Rap consumed southern cali when they came out and it was a group which ended up being highly influential as you've already stated. I think Express Yourself is a far greater example of how good NWA can be.

My choice for the best group has to be the Beastie Boys. Them along with Run DMC were just amazing to listen to in the mid 80's in comparison to anything else. The Beasties have evolved very well also and their live act is always a real treat. I think their voices are really eclectic also which draws me in, with neither of them sounding remotely alike in pitch.

So did many other hip hop groups and solo artists... How does that make them the "greatest?"

For the record, I completely disagree with the notion of labeling any group or particular artist as the best of any genre... It seems almost impossible to me.

I don't fully understand how it seems that this branding and ranking system is acceptable when talking about hip-hop.

You wouldn't have a thread in the indie and alternative section asking for who the best 'indie band of all time' are, or who your top 10 were, it's not an articulate discussion, it's just lists which most of the time don't make any logical sense.

What is the criteria behind these hip-hop lists, what are the positions of the acts in ones list made up of. There is no definitive ranking process, so as these lists are all going by different criteria; evaluating others lists and making your own are completely invalid concepts.

But there seems to be this compulsion with hip-hop to say this artist > that artist.

Probably because so much of hip hop subject matter involves being critical of others

Wiz is my new personal favorite. I've always been a huge fan of Jay-Z but I can't say that I love his new single.
