Music Fans for the Betterment of Rap/Rock
Aahh... rock music. Loud, rebellious, an aural representation of youth and energy. Good music. And then there's good ol' hip hop... gritty, vibrant, grooving, a beautiful musical culture arising from the stuggle of starving artists. Good music.
So naturally, combining these two genres sounds like a good idea right? Right? Unfortunetly, there haven't been many successful mainstream acts in this genre.* Just think of rap rock, nu metal, and associated movements. At least for me personally, the big names that come to mind are Limp Bizcut, Linkin Park, and Korn. But there is hope out there. Let us, fans of what rap rock we can find, band together and post some lesser known gems from this genre. I'd take the lead but I have to wait until I can post links :/ To be clear, the purpose of this thread is not to aribtrarily list or post youtube videos of every rap rock act we can find, but to inform other members of great acts out there and support them. Thus, we shall bring these acts into the mainstream (...or at least the hipster-stream) and clean up rap rock's rep. Defining success by quality, not sales that is. |

Rehab would probably be one of the better bets for rap/rock hybrids that are actually worth a damn. They really hit it big in 2008 (when I discovered them) with the single "Sittin' at a Bar", which joyfully narrative about how a man is feeling when he knows he's going to get arrested for something. So instead of acting like a rational human being he goes all self destructive and crashes his girlfriend's car. It's actually quite the sing-a-long song if the people know the lyrics. Besides that their 2005 album Graffiti the World was when they made a magnum opus with some really clever songs about some very realistic things. It's just a shame the 2008 re-release (with "Sittin' at a Bar" on it) wasn't as good because of some really key songs that they swapped out. Definitely worth a look:
Another memorable mention would be The Blend. While they lean more towards horn sections than most rap/rock bands do, they do have a pretty heavy grind in some songs. Very energetic and youthful, sort of like college party songs. However they do get deep in a few songs, but none of them are particularly negative, which is a really difference when it comes to most rap/rock. There's also a pretty new band out of Australia called Casual Projects which has a pretty unique sound. They're pretty youthful as well and a sense of humor. |
I'm personally not a fan, but Dalek is a Rap/Industrial Rock hybrid that is held in high regards by many.

With Dalek the samples are loud and distorted but not exactly rocky. Rap/drone perhaps?

It's good to be around again, don't expect an extended stay though! Busy busy.

Don't know if this is exactly what you mean but here are a few bands that I know:

When you say that I myself think of P.O.S. , a minnesota based rapper trying to blend punk with rap.

Keep posting guys, this stuff has been great so far. |
Hey Pete, I'm really digging that Rehab stuff. I'm gonna try and cop Graffiti the World whenever I can.
Have you guys heard Zach de la Rocha (vocalist from RATM) and the drummer from The Mars Volta's project? It's a bit dated to mention now, but if you're a de la Rocha fan it's worth checking out. |
It was mentioned by somebody else in the Rock And Metal forum, I can't remember who but they recommended the Judgement Night soundtrack, its pretty good as far as Rap Rock goes anyway. There are some cool collaborations on it the likes of: Faith No More & Bones Thugs N Harmony, De La Soul & Teenage Fan club to name a few.
