Dessa

I am completely enamoured by this ladies voice and music. Alternating between spoken word, Rap and traditional singing with genuinely interesting lyrics and beats generally provided by a live band.

This is no angry young girl MTV rap wanting to draw attention to itself. Instead it crosses genres lyrically and musically. Above all she seems genuinely talented. The album A Badly Broken Code is well worth checking out if you like a broad sound to your Hip Hop.

She's pretty cool, especially when under Doomtree. She just doesn't hold my attention for some reason.

Her music is quite smooth at times and if that isn't your thing generally then I can see what you mean. She has decent flow though I have to say.

Yeah, she's talented no doubt. I'll get the album when i have the chance..

maybe you would like to hook me up ;) ;)?

Arya Stark 07-02-2010 08:24 PM

I'm loving the first song.
She has a perfect balance of singing and spoken word.

I definitely want to keep listening.

Liking both these songs alot...maybe the second one more, but that could be because the quality of the sound on the first one wasn't as good. Both awesome though, something different for sure, at least for me. I'll definitely be checking that album out.

Love the music....

Originality wins me over every time.

LoathsomePete 07-03-2010 08:21 AM

A Badly Broken Code pretty much remains the only hip hop album of 2010 that I've liked so far.

Samm 07-03-2010 09:30 PM

I prefer her work on doom trees self titled over her solo work but she is pretty great regardless

Charlemagne 07-03-2010 11:29 PM

I love A Badly Broken Code, like Loathsome Pete said, it's my favorite hip hop album of 2010. I love her style and her lyrics, heck I love the whole Doomtree collective.

jackhammer 07-07-2010 03:51 PM

Anymore Doomtree stuff I should check out?

Well if you haven't checked out P.O.S. yet then I would highly suggest you do so. Last year's Never Better was a great addition to last year's impressive release list. His back catalog is also worth exploring but I would suggest going from newest to earliest. Technically those three releases were with Rhymesayers Entertainment which work a lot with Doomtree.

Other than Dessa's EP debut False Hopes I think there's only one other release which is the self-titled Doomtree album.

jackhammer 07-07-2010 04:28 PM

Yeah I have P.O.S's Never Better which is pretty good.

Charlemagne 07-08-2010 02:38 PM

Mike Mictlan and Lazerbeak's Hand Over Fist is worth checking out as well. Also P.O.S. The Audition.

I recently found out about her after NPR Music did a story and short interview with her about a 1/2 year ago.

She is super talented and it shows with almost anything she records. I have to give a lot of respect to anyone who writes and performs her own songs, raps, and spoken word!

Arya Stark 07-13-2010 03:12 PM

I've been listening to Dixon's Girl a lot when I'm driving to work.
I love it.

I think Doomtree's pretty boring, other than P.O.S. and sometimes Dessa. Uh, check out Grieves? I don't really like him, but he's on Doomtree and I guess he's alright. He's fun live.

Charlemagne 07-14-2010 06:27 PM

How could I forget...I highly recommend Cecil Otter's Rebel Yellow, definitely my second favorite Doomtree release.

Disagree about the ONLY Hip-Hop album of 2010, but I do love the album, and I'm a big Dessa/Doomtree fan.
Also, Jester, Grieves is pretty nice, in my opinion. Had no idea he signed to Doomtree (I knew he was now related to RSE in some form, though).

Jester 07-15-2010 10:42 AM

Oh, wait. Maybe he isn't from Doomtree; I assumed so because he was touring with Dessa and P.O.S., and his style is pretty similar to most of Doomtree.

Ah well, maybe you'll like him anyway, jackhammer.
