Spoken Word Rap
 

I was wondering if there's such a thing as spoken word rap. What I'm looking for is spoken word with a sense of rap, not pure poetry or pure rap. Something like "Sage Francis - Waterline" or "Saul Williams - Talk to Strangers". Any artist/song suggestions would be appreciated...

Yes. Although it's all done acapella (no beat/music) as far as I know. And all the artists I know are british so you probably won't like any of them but feel free to give these people a try anyway;

I was going to suggest Saul, but then I read the entire post.

You might want to check out The Last Poets. They predate Hip-Hop by a few years, but I would bet probably had a lot of influence on it. I would recommend checking out their song "When The Revolution Comes." I would post a youtube link but I haven't reached my 15 posts yet.

James Brown 'rapped' but they called it vamping...Chuck Brown rapped but they called i 'go-go'...Last Poets as mentioned and Watts Prophets...plus a whole slew of (to me) watered down trip hop / spoken word circa the 'poetry slam' era of late 1990's...

Two Ton Sloth has something sort of along those lines. Not really acapella, but the flow is sort of spoken word.
