Ol' Dirty Bastard

Ol' Dirty Bastard was a Wu-Tang rapper and easily stood out for his sloppy, off-beat, and dangerously unstable style. To me this guy really put the icing on the cake for the Wu-Tang, adding comic relief and a touch of the absurd.

Bringing him up because I just got the Return to the 36 Chambers album and I find it absolutely hillarious and charming, but the way I find The Joker off Batman funny - in a sort of he's nobody to mess with kind of way.

Sad about his death, but the man was a raving lunatic so you know it was to happen at one point.

But then again, was he a raving lunatic? Some have made the assertion that ODB was simply in character. I personally don't buy it because his behavior seemed far too self-destructive.

Discuss.

Ol' Dirt McGirt. He was by far my favorite Wu Tang MC, if not one of my favorite MCs period, and Return to the 36 Chambers is still one of my favorite hip hop albums of all time.

I was actually listening to ODB last night.
He's always been able to make me laugh, but his style is something that was hard not to love.

I don't think he was actually a lunatic.

Personally i love outrageous/absurd/lunatic type rap (usually found in the horrore sub-genre) for the humour in it. The exaggeration of something that is just so messed up it's funny.

Examples,

"I'm gonna put the killer ants in your pants"

"Wearing visors, sunglasses and disguises
Cause my split personality is having an identity crisis"

"In fact **** bad luck, they all hate my guts
Cause they sell more records, but I **** more sluts"

"**** a needle, here's a sword, bodypierce with this"

"I got the asiatic flow mixed with disco
Roll up on the scene like the Count of Monte Crisco
And MC's start to vanish
I rolled up on a jet black kid the nigga started speakin spanish
Yo! You wasn't from Panana!!
I asked you how you get so ****in dark, you said suntama
He responded so fast, you made me laugh"

"In controversy, I'm Eminem to the tenth degree
Those bullets that hit 'Pac was probably meant for me"

- not the greatest examples but meh, it's all i got right now lol.

Anyway, i'm pretty sure odb was a character as most rappers like that are. However there's no doubt he had problems, he was arrested for assault, robbery, assault again this time on his wife, weapon possession, attempted murder... put it this way, the guy had issues. Maybe he's one of the few rappers who stay true to their "character" lol. Who knows.

I can't see the difference between the two poll options.
He was very good.

TheBig3 12-18-2009 11:53 AM

"I got burned by gonorrhea twice"

he was the real deal.

I just listened to it for the first time in a long while. Great album. The man was the real deal who maybe had minor mental illness exacerbated by copious cocaine use.

One suggests he was as crazy as he sounds on his records, the other that he was simply in character.

Didn't think about that. The drugs probably had a lot to do with it.

ODB was as real as it gets... Just seeing him in interviews and the way he rhymes and how he is on stage, there is no doubt he's 100% being himself. He probably had some mental issues, and he definitely used too many drugs. A few interviews you can tell he's high as hell on cocaine and/or drunk. The guy was just plain raw as they come.

There's something about ODB that really got me into the Wu. He was just a hilarious guy, character or not - he fit in the mix.
