story telling songs!
hey I was just listening to my iTunes on shuffle and heard Immortal Technique's Dance With The Devil & Boogiemonsters (Thanks 86) Old Man Jacob's Well, & was wondering if anyone knows any other story telling songs like that! Songs like Insane Poetry's One Careless Moment
It doesn't have to be morbid or anything like those ones listed. and it doesn't have to be strictly a story, it can have a little wiggle room like B.I.G.'s Gimme Tha Loot or Warning. I'd like to get a collection of songs like that and maybe make a playlist or something. |
Frank Zappa's Titties & Beer is a great storytelling song. It's about Frank's meeting with the devil on the Mountain of Mystery and it's awesome.

off the top of my head...
Tupac - brendas got a baby (probably didn't have to list that one) Apathy - the janitor Apathy - same ol same ol D12 - Revelation DMX - All of the "Damien" songs Big Daddy Kane - somebodys been sleeping in my bed Cuban Link - letter to pun (not so much a story but literally a letter to his dead friend - big pun) Jedi Mind Tricks feat RA the Rugged man - Uncommon Valour: A vietnam story Jurassic 5 - Remember his name Lowkey feat Logic - Relatives Masta Ace - Dear Diary (sort of a discussion rather than a story) Eminem - stan (obviously) Fort Minor - feel like home Hilltop Hoods - what the seasons change Hilltop Hoods - Stopping all stations Nas - Rewind Pez - Lost Respek BA - In Dreams Royce 5'9 - Death is Certain pt.II Sage Francis - Runaways Tech N9ne - The Rain (Factual not fictional, the story of how he struggles to keep in touch with his family now that he's getting some form of celebrity status) Will Smith - Loretta (true story about a women who stalked him) A Tribe Called Quest - Phony Rappers A Tribe Called Quest feat Faith Evans - Stressed Out a few samples of the ones i've suggested... ... |
^It is possible to post several times in a thread you know. Like instead of posting a list of 25 songs, you could elaborate on one or two of them so that your info comes in a chunk that it's possible to check out and digest in one go. ;)

This album: |
atmosphere -- "always coming back home to you"
|
Slick Rick - Children's Story
|
"Tangled Up in Blue" and "Lily, Rosemary, and the Jack of Hearts" spring to mind.
|

the first verse on this one is story style:
YouTube - Murs ft. The Grouch - Angels YouTube - Scarface-The Best Of Scarface-The Wall YouTube - Yukmouth Ft Z-Ro & Trae -Hard Tymez -- very "thugged out" but it's deep YouTube - CORMEGA-FALLEN SOLDIERS (REMIX) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_IFQa9X8iF8--- some of you might recognize this as a Rick Ross track. **** rick ross.....this is the original! all I'm gonna post for now |
whatever some more LOL
YouTube - 2pac - Tupac Part TIme Mutha YouTube - Ghostface-Child's Play YouTube - BLACK Rob - Jasmine feat Carl Thomas -- Black Rob was the ****!!!! he was one of hip-hop's greatest storytellers...and an overall sick MC, even though one could consider his rhymes basic. unfortunately, he wa sa little too hoody. he also fell victim to the 'Bad Boy Record Deal', and recently was sent to prison for 7 years after robbing a woman in a hotel for $6000 in jewellry and $3000 cash or something. lol. he was sick though YouTube - BLACK Rob - I Love You Baby Feat P Diddy two albums you should check out: Sticky Fingaz - Black trash: the autobiography of kirk jones AND Prince Paul - A Prince Among Thieves both these albums are cinematic. The former is about a dude who gets out of jail....the latter about a dude who has MC aspirations. Thats all I'ma tell ya. Download those albums. classic stuff |
whats the bad boy record deal???

apparently their record deals were ridiculous. **** like not owning their own publishing, ridiculously stupid advances (G-Dep once said he was given a $300 advance LOL). Black Rob was similar I believe. it's basically because Puff'sa business man and some of these cats were straight ghetto dudes who don't even read the contract. just straight up sign it. they get a bit of upfront cash...some cars and ****. so somewhere down the line (The Lox figured this out after their first album) they realize they're supposed to be making WAY more money (especially of PLATINUM selling albums). I know that up until 2005 P.Diddy still owned the lox's publishing. obviously it's not just Bad Boy Records....this has always been going. it's just hilarious (and sad) that Black Rob finds himself in a situation where he needs to rob $3000 or something of somebody. |
oh ok that makes sense, thanks for clearing it up, i'll have to check some black rob out
|
Martini is my favorite one in this post, because the three verse are true stories. Ignore the outro/credits. Haha. |
yah.. nice collection....
|
+1 on Aesop Rock's "No Regrets"
also, Common- I used to love her Common- Stolen Moments I and II Those are a few I can think of not listed ... |
Their songs aren't always particular fun or happy, but ImmortalTechnique can tell amazing stories through their music. I can't listen to them often because some of their songs depress me but they tell some of the best stories i've ever heard.
|
^ Immortal Technique is one person.

One of the best
KRS-One - "Love's Gonna Get'cha (Material Love)" |

if you can find a copy of Biography from Siditious , that is one of my favorite storytelling beats/songs of all time. I am also a big fan of the Immortal Technique Dance W/ the Devil.

Children's Story- Slick Rick |
Beastie Boys "Paul Revere"
Traveling Wilburys "Tweeter and the Monkey Man" |
not that it has any relavance, but check out a guy called James McMurtry, he explains hiw story rather well.
|
Any of Jay Z's stuff for the most part tells a story.
|
Paul Revere - The Beastie Boys
|
Personally i think that "You Never Know" was a better song than "Dance with the Devil" but the sickly twisted nature of "Dance..." catapulted it into a certain level of popularity his other tracks haven't attained.
also, November - Sadistik |

Apathy - What Goes up
Its about a gang banger who fires a round up into the air on new years eve. the round comes down and hits his girlfriend in the head. Then he kills himself. |
Thank you for extinguishing any suspense/catharsis I would have received from listening to that song. You have done the opposite of inspire me to listen to it.
|
I'm sorry, you should still listen to it though. Or at least some of his other songs.
