Your introduction to hiphop
Sorry if this is a repeat thread, I wasn't sure which terms I could use to search for it...
What got you into hiphop for the first time in your life? For me, what got me into "hiphop" was honestly Will Smith 'Willenium'. Feel free to laugh, I still do too... however, I don't regret that- because without it I wouldn't have transitioned into the genre, and I wouldn't be where I am today (since I'm constantly improving/discovering new additions for my taste). I remember, it's 8th grade, and I want to look into this whole "rap" thing, but had NOOO clue where to start. So, I asked for a Will Smith CD because I knew the one song from the movie 'Wild Wild West'. I remember getting made fun of, and deciding I should look into stuff a little more and buy my next album after some research. A bit later I had my sister pick up Dr. Dre's '2001'- and I haven't looked back. I hid it from my parents- partially due to the chron on the cover, but also because it was the first time I listened to music that had cussing in it. Since that day it has become my favorite genre and I can say I've come a long way. I still have that Will Smith CD, but I think it's been gathering dust since it hasn't been spun since 8th grade :) What about you kind ladies and gents? |
Haha... For me it was Beastie Boys. Back in the License To ILL days.
But eventually, that dickhead Snow came out and ruined things between me and any semblance of Hiphop until the late 90's when I started listening to various underground hiphop acts that lead me into my current love for underground hiphop and hate for the crap that comes out on the radio now days. But yea, for me it all started with BB. |
Alphabet Aerobics by Blackalicious some friends got me really baked and then put it on in the car and I think we made it to the G's before I realized that he was rapping through the alphabet. I remember just being extremely high and saying "hey is he..." then my buddy Wes said "Yeah, he's rapping thru the alphabet" and my response was a Keanu Reeves worthy "woah"

Growing up I hated hip-hop, mostly because all the hip-hop I heard at the time was crap like MC Hammer, but when I was 15 I borrowed the first Arrested Development album from my brother and totally fell in love with it. It's not like it immediately turned me into big hip-hop head but starting at that point I got more and more into hip-hop over the years

My first intro to hip hop was in Gawanas projects in the 70s. My friends had a small group that battled other groups from the hood. Then I went out and bought a record called Rap dirty from this cat Blow fly from the 70's also. Then I started buying other hip hop records from unknown artists and then Sugar Hill gang came out. I had some early Crash Crew stuff and Spoonie Spoon among others.
