Probably third. But my favourite in terms of a "pure" Hip Hop album.
Shabazz Palaces - Black Up Danny Brown - XXX Elzhi - Elmatic Whilst you are at it, download the Instrumental album. Fucking awesome.

Yeah I agree, Elzhi gets my vote too.
To me when comparing them his delivery makes Nas sound a bit slower/sluggish. I have been listening to the album to death on Spotify, and think I am gonna have to go out and buy it, although I did a search last week and can't find it available on cd only mp3 downloads which surprised me. After listening to it loads I went back to the Nas original and you can definitely hear the backing music isn't identical, extremely close. Not that it matters. What did you think Goofle11? What he did, by reinventing a classic should be applauded. It almost shouldn't have worked and would have been easy to say he wasn't upto the scratch of the original, but he did such a great job. A brave MC, nobody else over the years has done the same and attempted this, I wonder if this will become a trend, in 5 years time (or less) will we have people doing similar with Tupac/Biggie albums? I think Elmatic is a great album, and quite a bit better than Illmatic in terms of content, even if it will never be as influential or legendary.
And check out the Will Sessions instrumental album, fantastic.

He's been around quite a while, am wondering why I hadn't heard of him years ago. |

Yesterday I created a spotify playlist with the original Nas album followed by the Elzhi album versions back to back.
Track 1 is Nas "The Genesis" Track 2 Elzhi "The Genesis" Track 3 Nas "Halftime" etc. Have been enjoying comparing the 2, listening to it back to back it really highlights the differences between the backing music also. Also watched this earlier about Nas Illmatic, didn't realise he was only 18 when he recorded it and that his dad (a musician) played horn on an album track. http://www.youtube.com/watch?nomobile=1&v=b3oez_FRogI Last edited by duotone; 10-14-2012 at 04:38 PM. |
