Default The Anticon Appreciation Thread

The founding members of Anticon have been releasing genre-shattering infused hip hop since 1997 and have made a huge impact on what we consider as 'alternative' hip hop, as well as having a firm voice in the industry as a whole, and I think they deserve some love. The main ‘collective' consists of Doseone, JEL, Sole, Why?, Odd Nosdam, Alias and Pedestrian but they often collaborate with each other, forming acts such as Subtle, cLOUDDEAD, Hymie's Basement and a **** load of other collaborations. The amount of music and diversity put out by the Anticon group is nothing short of amazing. If you can't get into 'rap' this might be a good place to start, or a good place to realize it's not all black and white.

So basically, if you don't appreciate these artists we can't be friends.

A few good ones:
Why?

cLOUDDEAD

Doseone

Hymie's Basement

Janszoon and RezZ, on my good list..

The rest of you however..

I agree cLOUDDEAD is one of the better projects, as I tend to listen to the material Why? puts out and contributes to more. Yoni Wolf is a god, people.

Was it you I was talking about Music for the Advancement of Hip-Hop with a couple weeks ago or was that someone else?

Anyway, I've had so many near misses with Why? it's hilarious. I first heard about him about six years ago when Oaklandazulasylum came out. I remember searching high and low for that album and never finding it until I lost interest and forgot about ever getting it. To this day I still don't own any Why?. Then I went to see him/them back in September at the Unitarian church in downtown Philly. Me and the friend I went with weren't that into the opening act so we went to a bar around the corner for a couple drinks. By the time we got back the show had just ended and we completely missed Why?.

Pretty sure you recommended that when I was going on about how all of the founding members should have one album together, I should get back to looking for that. Tsk on missing Why? live though! I would do unforgivable things to see Yoni preform. But yea, I can send you an album now if you're still interested, probably Elephant Eyelash since I already have it upped.

That would be great! I can send Music for the Advancement of Hip-Hop in return.

I find anticon to be pretty average honestly. Why? is pretty good, but not anything super special in my opinion. (alopecia was among the better 2008 releases). The only Doseone groups im really into are Subtle (namely For Hero: For Fool) and Deep Puddle Dynamics' Tase of Rain...Why Kneel (Slug, dose, among a few others. great stuff). Clouddead is something ive never really been able to get into, but im giving the self-titled another listen as I speak. Hymie's Basement I never heard.

Overall though from what Ive heard I find anticon to be a pretty average independant rap label, eclipsed by similar offerings from Def Jux, Rhymesayers, and Stones Throw.
