MF Doom is a must listen as far as underground hip hop goes. To be honest, he isn't a stand out MC but has absolutely brilliant production. Very mellow.
Check out: Operation Doomsday Madvillainy (by Madvillain, it's a collab with the producer Madlib) Some other great albums, that I can't really be bothered to describe. Cannibal Ox - The Cold Vein K'naan - The Dusty Foot Philosopher Mos Def - The New Danger Look Daggers - Suffer in Style Antipop Consortium - Arrhythmia Any one of those would be a great choice. |

I'd say Doom is a pretty standout Emcee myself, or at least his lyrics and voice are.
Anyway, GZA's kinda underground, he's good to look into.

Deep Puddle dynamics- The Taste Of Rain..Why Kneel? is experimental and unsusual. Busdrivers Roadkillovercoat still gets a few listens on my MP3.
