Old Rap

i dont know why, but i never fell for all the new "gangsta" hip hop stuff. I have nothing against people that like it, it doesn't fully bother me, but I have no idea how the idea behind real rap got turned into people that have lots of money in their banks or hos up in whatever.

does anyone have any suggestions for artists or songs that were of the old rap, where it was actually about rhyme rythm and had meaning?
thanks in advance

simplephysics 12-09-2008 06:00 PM

Because it's not like good hip hop isn't around today.

Generally most of the "gangsta" stuff i thought was prominent in the mid-90's?

Wu Tang clan, Tupac, Biggie etc

N.W.A was from the 80's. Most commercial rappers these days seem less like that stereotype these days.
Anyway, old artists you should check out:
Digable Planets
Black Sheep
Rakim

MetalChaos 12-09-2008 06:55 PM

Ill Bill
Tribe Called Quest
Ol Dirty Bastard
Mos Def
B.I.G
NWA
Dr. Dre
Ghostface Killah
Public Enemy
Disposable Hero's Of Hiphoprisy
DMX
Sage Francis
Non Phixion
Jedi Mind Tricks
Cannibal Ox
Tupac
Beastie Boys.
Snoop Dogg (old anyway)

FaSho 12-23-2008 10:24 AM

No.
There were a few good artists(NWA, Biggie, Cannibal Ox and such), but there is so much better stuff around these days.

NiGhtt 12-23-2008 10:52 AM

Everyone knows old rap is better, why was my post deleted

Urban Hat€monger ? 12-23-2008 10:58 AM

Because if you post 15 short posts followed by a link in your 16th our spam filters kick in & automatically delete them.

That's why it says in the rules that you didn't read don't post 15 short posts just so you can post a link.

I think you are looking for artists like:

Jurassic 5
Blackalicious
Aesop Rock
Sunspot Jonz
Del Tha Funkee Homosapien
etc.

All these rap artists/groups really don't rap about guns and hos and most of them are great.

simplephysics 01-03-2009 01:11 PM

Most of your list is pretty current though..

thehiphopdrug 01-03-2009 02:44 PM

Okay, I was thinking the guy was looking for recent stuff that had the old-school style. Well, damn..

Big Daddy Kane
KRS-One
Big L
Craig Mack
A Tribe Called Quest
(any of the native tounges)

There's a ton, even older like early 80s stuff. Dunno what he's after. I mean you do a search of those rappers on amazon or something and you'll find a bunch of related artists.

FaSho 01-03-2009 04:03 PM

A Hell Yes to Big L

niveek 01-03-2009 04:41 PM

NWA
Dr.Dre
Tupac
Run DMC
Tribe Called Quest
Rakim

There is so much good stuff from back in the day. But Ive gotta say that today there are lots of great stuff too. Just that they don't get to the radio often enough.
Eminem and Kanye West are excellent examples of good artists who made it to the spot light in my opinion.

Whats wrong with rapping about 'guns and ho's', its more entertaining than rapping about afrocentrcity and peace if you ask me.

Sneer 01-07-2009 09:40 AM

Its fine, if you happen to live in an environment with a lot of guns and prostitutes.

Nothing's wrong with it, it just gets old when everybody's doing it.

donrobert 01-08-2009 11:22 PM
