2008: A Great Year for Hip-Hop

this year has been solid as far as hip-hop releases go. we've got Flo Rida, Weezy, David Banner, DJ Khaled, Rick Ross, TI, Young Jeezy, and Webbie all putting out great records

what are you guys' favorite releases of this year, so far? mine is definitely Webbie's Savage Life 2. the beats are solid, the rhymes and guests are tight, and the production is perfect

what are your favorite singles? Mine is probably "Out Here Grinding," and I can't wait for Ace Hood's debut, which is dropping soon

Peerbreed 09-18-2008 01:24 PM

The only Hip Hop album I've picked up this year is Invincible's ShapeShifters. I love her delivery on this album. The production is alright but it's her flow that really makes this stand out. This album was on heavy rotation for a few weeks. Sledgehammer!, ShapeShifters and Locusts are my favorite tracks off the album.

Kirby 09-18-2008 02:15 PM

Killer by Tech N9ne
When Life Gives You Lemons, You Paint That **** Gold by Atmosphere
The Balancing Act by Sadistik

My Three Fav. Hip Hop Albums of 08, so far.

never heard of her, but i'll have to look into it. i must admit i'm behind this year as far as underground hip-hop goes, but i'll give it a shot

Here's the link to her My Space. Has a few songs off the album.

Carter 3
The Recession

really really looking fwd to Jay and Kanye's offerings.

Kirby 10-09-2008 01:44 PM

^ really?

I'm not knocking your decisions, but there were MUCH better releases this year.

Davey Moore 10-09-2008 07:04 PM

I can't stand Lil Wayne. From what I've heard of his songs, all he talks about is how great he is. Overrated.

Kirby 10-09-2008 07:41 PM

I couldn't agree more.

And yet sort of off topic, I can't stop listening to Shimmy Shimmy Ya by ODB.

I'd agree with all those but Flo Rida and Webbie, they're not that good in my opinion, though Flo's alright. His name is the bomb.

Best Hip Hop singles so far for me would be A Milli, Get Like Me, Lollipop Remix (the one that has the Shawty Say part in it, but not David Banner, I think), and some others. I kinda gave up on the radio.

Leeman 10-16-2008 06:57 AM

I agree with Surell. Webbie and Flo Rida are, in my opinion, pretty bad. They are your classic one hit wonders, throw in a couple fancy beats and repetative, yet catchy lyrics and you've got yourself a superstar. I read a revriew about Flo Rida in the newspaper and they called him the King of Ring Tones and frankly I think that is a perfect description, catchy enough to be popular, yet not good enough to leave a lasting impression in the Hip-Hop community.

My favourite album this year would have to be The 3rd World by Immortal Technique, favourtie track, either The 3rd World or Rebel Arms.

Surell 10-17-2008 11:16 PM

Speaking of leaving an impression on the Hip Hop Community, I think the Carter 3 did that pretty well.

Leeman 10-18-2008 08:00 AM

Agreed, unfortunately, the more radio friendly songs have made it the biggest, although there is nothing wrong with A Milli and Lollipop, there are as good if not better tracks on Tha Carter 3 that go overlooked...

Surell 10-20-2008 09:58 PM

I thought A Milli was a damn good track, probably my favorite on the album, because of how raw it was. And Lollipop was good too, just my least favorite on the album. The whole album is gold to me.

Rainard Jalen 10-22-2008 03:45 AM

I completely disagree. This has not been a particularly hot year for hip hop at all. Records have been overly long and laboured, often half constructed of pointless filler. Most albums I've heard (that includes about 85% of the albums mentioned in this thread) have for the most part been boring and have just played it safe, ending up not necessarily bad, but just unspectacular and mediocre.

I feel one of the best albums that has come out was P's HNIC pt.2, and even that wasn't particularly great on the whole. It just had some superb mixing by The Alchemist (who is clearly the most talented producer in the game).

I'm both amazed, baffled and quite sad that anybody could genuinely consider 2008 to be a great year for hip-hop. Hell, it hasn't really been a particularly fantastic year for any genre of music that I listen to. Wake up, smell the coffee dudes. Last time hip-hop had a great year was 2006.

DearJenny 10-22-2008 10:29 AM

I've actually enjoyed listening to the rap/hip-hop/r&b stations this year so I'd have to agree.

This also may be caused by my increase in clubbing, but then again the increase in good music could cause that too.

'08s been good to us.

Have you listened to Tech N9ne's "Killer"

Just wondering.

Surell 11-04-2008 08:59 PM

I really dig Kanye's new single Love Lockdown. I hope it'll be on his new album, then I might pick it up. Also, Swagger Like Us is probably the best collab in awhile.

This needed revival dawg.

Kirby 11-04-2008 09:15 PM

KanYe's next CD will have Love Lockdown.
The next CD will be ALL autotune.

Surell 11-04-2008 09:40 PM

It does him pretty well, but it'll probably be a more RnB album since that's what the autotune is used for. If I'm thinking of the right thing, which is the kind of electric voice.

Surell 11-14-2008 01:14 AM

Yeah, I'm double postin, bitch bitch. D:

I just thought I'd drop Young Jeezy in here. He's one of the few new rappers I like. I'm thinkin about pickin up his debut Thug Motivation 101 and his new one the Recession.

Anytime.
I ordered the CD and my girlfriend got his shirt.
I'm really digging his music, and hope he comes out with some new ****.

FaSho 11-21-2008 01:58 PM

David Banner and Jeezy definatley win for mainstream stuff this year.

If you consider Flo Rida, Rock Ross and DJ Kaled putting out records = good year then you need to go back to the computer and listen to something else.

This is just my opinion but I truly think DJ Kaled is one of the biggest pieces of **** in the entire industry. A self loving, talentless oaf.

FaSho 11-21-2008 02:03 PM

Rick Ross is legit.

Denizen-Red 12-03-2008 10:22 PM

It's looking like Diplo and Benzi's Fear And Loathing In Hunts Vegas is going to be my favorite of the year.

And I was trying to post a couple links. one to a sampler and another to a review + a few mp3s... but You are only allowed to post URLs to other sites after you have made 15 posts or more.
:(

Alkajazz 12-04-2008 09:44 PM

Elhzi - The Preface
Murs - Murs for President
DJ Muggs VS Planet Asia - Pain Language
CYNE - Pretty dark things
Q-Tip - The Renaissance
Nas - Untitled

The list could go on and on. I still have quite a few albums that I've been interested in that I haven't got around to listening to. Dope year for sure.

Its to bad he pussied out on the title.

Surell 12-05-2008 08:52 PM

He was gonna get dropped. If he gets dropped, he can't even put out the album. Well, I guess he could, but you know. It's some old bull****. I think the other title would've been better, too.

What is really **** is that the only people who would've have cared would be middle-aged PTA women, and I'm pretty sure rap music doesn't garner very many sales from that demographic.

Surell 12-11-2008 09:38 PM

But they sure do get a lot of bitching from that demographic.

Surell 12-11-2008 09:51 PM

True that.

I MEAN WAIT A MINUTE.
