Hip-hop is the blanket genre (like rock or metal) and rap is a sub-genre (like rockabilly or speed metal). Other styles of hip-hop include turntablism, (new school) reggaeton, trip-hop, and low bap.

The origins of Rapping are in Jamacian soundsystems but this is rarely recognised in America, which is a shame considering that they are the best at it these days.

Aaah. I get it now... I think. Sean Kingston and Fort Minor are both hip-hop, but Fort Minor is rap and Sean Kingston isn't. Eh?
BTW. Unless you're a hick, rap and wrap sound different. To say rap you make a face like an orangutan, to say wrap you make an "ooooh" face. Try it.

What are you talking about? They are pronounced the exact same way. They are spelled the same way phonetically even.

You're half right, Jamaican radio personalities would talk over reggae instrumentals and the trend reached New York, where it evolved and turned into the art form it is today. So rapping does have its roots in Jamaica, but it was really the MC's in Newy York that shaped it. I guess you could say Jamaica was the quarry for the raw materials and the Americans were the artisans.
