Sex, money, and drugs are huge parts of pretty much everyones life.

Especially poverty-stricken, straight edged virgins.

In this country, you gotta make the money first, then when you get the money, you get the power. Then when you get the power, then you get the women

Jester 11-18-2010 07:06 PM

^ What about the drugs?

I think it depends. We all have a "natural state of being". Or that music that we naturally gravitate towards. But there's always a little wiggle room as far as the music we're keen to like. Say for instance it's a Friday night, I'm about to go out on the town to have a good time and dance. I'm not gonna go to Pandora and put on the Wu-Tang playlist. I'm gonna put on Ying Yang Twins, or Pitbull. Are these my favorite Rappers? Hell no. But within the right circumstances I can appreciate their work.
Another scenario, say it's any night of the week and there's just friends all hanging out together. We're playing xbox, just talking about life, a casual setting. I'm fine with some Wiz Khalifa playing in the background because his music compliments the mood. Or lastly, say I'm in the car. I use to have subs in my car, so I loved to listen to music with heavy bass. In that scenario, Wayne, got a lot of play, or anything that had a lot of bass for that matter. All the catchy, hook-heavy, mainstream songs. It all depends on scenario.
But my natural state is along the lines of Kanye West. I appreciate a trend setter. Someone who is not just a rapper but a true artist. Someone who treats a beat as a canvas and their lyrics as the brush and uses both to paint a beautiful picture. I want my music to be an "experience" not just sounds that flow through my ears. Something groundbreaking and original.

It's hard to really tell what it is, as some people look at the term "backpacker" as a bad thing.

That being said, I think Cool Kids fall more into the Hipster Category.
I do love me some Cool Kids though.

Can you define "backpacker". I mean, in the early 00's Kanye was the poster boy for backpack rapper because he was the most successful artist who hadn't been shot or sold drugs. So does this definition still hold true for today?

Like any other genre, I like hip hop that is innovative and progressive.

In terms of specific sup-genres of hip-hop though, besides alternative hiphop, I'm pretty crazy about southern style hip-hop.. everything from ying yang to T.I. to the Houston scene.

I like how the electronic scene and hip-hop have been working together a lot, for example MSTRKRFT's Hand of God, plus a lot of influence in the production of a lot of recent hip hop albums.

I really like artists that use complicated rhythm structures in their flow, as well as changing up the traditional chorus-verse-chorus-verse structure

EDIT: if you know any artists that aren't too well known that you think I might enjoy based on the above description then a pm would be hugely appreciated, if you don't think it is appropriate for this thread

I can say that I'm a recent rap, hip-hop convert. The stuff that I've been listening to lately are kinda old school. From what I heard, I like Gangsta's Paradise by Coolio. I absolutely love Eminem. I could feel his outrage of emotions, very honest.
