See, with any music I don't feel the need to label anything.. I don't sit around and have categories that I put artists in... Cause it doesn't matter what you call it.

Like I said, if a stranger approaches me and is like... 'Hey Dirty, what kinda music do you like?' I might say 'more old school stuff like nas, wu, big L, etc...'

If I liked Beastie Boys, and Bambata, and Big Daddy Kane, etc.. then I'd say "I like the really old school stuff man, like Beastie and BDK"

Why do you have to argue about it? Is it even a big deal? Nas's Illmatic came out in '94. I was 6. That's far back enough for me to say "My favorite CD is that old school Illmatic dude"... cause it's not recent to me at all.

But that style of hip hop isn't even old school; referring to something that's "old school" refers to early forms. The 90's wasn't early for hip hop--it was hip hop at its best, but there's a completely distinct style that came before the 90's. That's old school, 90's was the new school. It's not new to us anymore, but just chronologically speaking, it's not really exactly old school.

Why not argue about it? It's a music board. We can debate about terms referring to music. Resorting to "it's my opinion, leave me alone!" is retarded. Explain your opinion, support your side. I'll support mine, and we learn from each other.

Stop taking disagreements so personal, people.

I like hip hop that's dancey. In other words, I like dance/house/funk/eurodance music that has rapping in it.

underground & old school.
I enjoy creativity so mainstream is out of the picture. Anything repetitive or annoying I cannot stand. Seeing new styles emerge is the best thing about underground.

No one's taking it personal. I'm just telling you all it will get nowhere because people inevitably resort to "it's my opinion, leave me alone!". With something like this there's no real ground to solidify your arguments on, beside perhaps mainstream perception, but in this case even that is divided. So basically, you will say "80s was old school, 90s is golden age", someone else will say "no, everything pre 2000 was old school", and conan will say :whythis:

My stance: 80's hip hop is when hip hop developed its first sonic; the 90's era had a completely different sound than the 80's (its ancestor). If we're going to call anything old school, 80's hip hop would be old school. That was the first decade of hip hop. 90's was a second stage, hip hop evolved. Calling something "old school" outside of hip hop would be referring to the early/earliest stages of something that's changed, wouldn't it? What's the point in calling anything old school if you're actually referring to such a wide, wide range/evolution of sounds?

Yeah, an argument over perception CAN go somewhere. You learn to understand the term from someone else's perspective, how the hell is that pointless? If I didn't disagree and it didn't lead to this post, you probably wouldn't have considered everything I said above. Now that you have, maybe it will change your position--I don't expect it to, but at least you have more information to make what you think is a better choice. Almost anytime people retreat to opinion, an opportunity is wasted.

Yeah, you were taking it personal. If you weren't, you wouldn't have been calling me an ass.

Try to understand, you didn't post that at first. You posted

Golden age hip hop generally begins in the late 80's -> mid 90's.

Look, on a timeline of hip hop, the 90's is far from the beginning; it's not old school.

If 90's is old school, according to you guys, then what's 80's?

your post above however if far more insightful so if that's what you were getting at then I apologize, but the way the conversation was going I just thought I'd jump in and say everybody's right now shut the bloody frick up. good lord, i'm arguing about how to debate. that's depressing.

Alright, well, you did ignore the main point of my post.

I'm feeling kid cudi and big boi right now everything us seems to mash together.....to much like pop music nothing different same formula. Its like u have 3 or 4 subjects sex, money, drugs, hardship of the black male, a few more but i mean its kinda boring. Not that big boi and kid cudi dont touch on those subjects,But they do it differently alot differently. Im not a fan of rap at all so its gotcha be pretty different for me to like it.

SeymourGreenspoon 11-01-2010 08:02 AM

I like 90's gangsta rap (Eazy-E, Tupac and the other classics) and underground/nerdy/political/whatever rap (Del The Funky Homosapien, Mr Lif, Dubmatique, Souls Of Mischief)
Ahah I need to discover new stuff
