Actually mankycaant I thought that was brilliantly written. That was put into words better than I've seen anybody do it. He doesn't make my top 100 rappers at this point. He might get an honorable mention at best.
Happy to see Aesop Rock pulling 3rd place behind the Beasties though, that's a glimmer of hope in this abysmal poll result. |

It is a good post, and well written, but I think it shows how much Eminem's best work has been overshadowed by the terrible nonsense he is putting out now.
Are people really going to say that 'The Marshall Mathers LP' and 'The Slim Shady LP' aren't great Rap records? Because I think they are, without any doubt. I have as much enjoyment listening to them as pretty much any Rap record I have heard.

I wouldn't say he is over rated by most people, it just turns out that he is probably one of very few white rappers that people who voted have heard of - therefore the best by default. And, as I said, he actually has released very good material.
He has let himself down since 'The Marshall Mathers LP' but he is still a very good lyricist that chose a mainstream path pretty much from the off. If he decided to make alternative rap that would appeal to members of this forum, I think it would have been some of the best you ever heard.

People cite those albums as a testament to Eminem greatness, but to me it's still the same material.
Excluding the pop singles, what exactly is it that makes the slim shady LP great, and his newer material lacking? Because it all sounds like the same **** to me. |

I agree about him always being mainstream. And I also agree that he is clearly not in it completely for the music. I just rate him very highly as a rapper and think he would do well in any direction he chose.
