mainstream rap of nowadays =/= gangster rap

that being said, i prefer underground over gangster (which I hate except for JMT, if they count), but i prefer mainstream "hip-pop" (not R&B!) over underground rap

interesting... a quick question if I may.

Isnt it fair to say that no one that hates either or can be familiar enough with both to really say which is better?

I mean the underground stuff is way too hard to come by. While the mainstream stuff pollutes the airwaves with stuff that rarely resembles their actual album.

So that leaves backpackers only hearing whatever Hot 97 and MTV decide to play. While Gangsta rap fans that shop at best buy will never even know the underground cats exist, let alone be able to hear/judge them.

Dreadnaught, isn't the point of underground that it's a little harder to get to, which makes it so much special when you get a hold of it? I always thought that's what it meant to be underground.

That, and they dont want to make money. They are only doing it for the art. Yeah right. If you believe that then I have a couple acres in Fla you can buy. In general mainstream rappers fronted A LOT of their own capital. Backpackers dont have that kind of capital. Like any investment you get out what you put in.

If I remember correctly TI owned his own label and had been grinding for a while before he released Trapmuzik.

What he's supposed to do when a lot of people like his music, ask them not to buy it?

And I swear music is the only thing that I can think of where the fewer people know about you the better you obviously are. I mean we dont go around saying Kobe Bryant isnt the best player in the world because everyone in the world has seen him play and knows what he can do so obviously everyone in the world has a horrible eye for talent and cant be trusted. However the few guys that hang out in a park watching some guy dunk have scouting talent to label him as the best player in the world.

Sorry if that was a runon sentence but do you see what I'm getting at? I mean someone in this thread say Gza wasnt mainstream. WTF??? How can any member of Wu not be mainstream. He's toured all over the world for almost 2 decades and was part of a movement that helped shape hip hop as we know it today.

Go to any average music store in the country and I guarantee you they won't be that hard to find.

So then what makes them underground.

Being poor?

It just seems like if one is an underground artist they just arent working hard enough to be known. Isnt it part of the American dream to not settle for low levels of succes. In a way arent underground rappers just part of the problem?

I mean if their message is so profound why arent they working harder to make sure everyone is enlightened by their outlook?

It seems to me underground = lack of grind.

I say all that purely for an answer on what makes someone underground, sorry If I've offended.

I think it's a thing about greed and selling out, like you see with a lot of gangster (usually named mainstream) rap, ie: Collipark Music rappers, Boosie, and people who put out dance tracks (the new craze). Underground is just being different, really, like any genre's underground sound. They've all got it.
