Immortal Technique sounds to me like he is showing off in two ways. First, he is trying to show how clever he is; second, he is trying to show how dismissive of others he can be. The veggie options you have look pretty good to me! :) Quote:
You are right that some uninformed vegans have made horrendous errors with their children's diets...but this is an exception and far from the rule and unfortunately reflects the fact that most people, whether omnivorous or vegan, appear to lack important nutrition information. A dangerous situation is when people are so uninformed that they don't realize they are uninformed. I doubt many parents want to watch their children die. The importance I place on people informing themselves is the reason Immortal Technique's "Beef and Broccoli" song bothers me so much: since he is famous, he has a chance to inform others and to broaden his own mind in the process, but he fails to do either. |

Children NEED milk. They NEED vitamin D. And idiotic closed minded vegans who force their children into their way of life are destroying them, killing them. The recommended intake of calcium PER DAY for 9 - 18 year olds is 1,300 milligrams. Milk and Cheese are the best sources for this (followed by yoghurt..another dairy product). You can also use other items such as Orange Juice and Broccoli. But you would need to take in almost nine times the amount of broccoli to get the same amount of calcium you would get from just over 200millilitres of milk (that's one glass of milk). So one glass of milk is equal to just over one litre of broccoli. So unless you're feeding your kid a litre of broccoli each day you are risking your childs health, they would become drastically more susceptible to hypocalcemia, rickets, Osteomalacia, liver failure and various other serious health problems. Eating meat does not harm your health. The key to being healthy is not to rule out an entire food group but to eat everything in moderation. To much of any one thing is bad for you. Vegans who force their children into eating like them are killing their own flesh and blood. Simple as that. |

Harvard School of Public Health: Calcium and Milk - What Should You Eat? - The Nutrition Source - Harvard School of Public Health American Dietetic Association: Position Paper on Vegetarian Diets Vegetarian Diets You are very correct that humans need vitamin D and must take vitamin D supplements if they do not get enough sunlight. I am wondering if you realize dairy products are usually supplemented with synthetic vitamin D? Well, Immortal Technique's "Beef and Broccoli" song has inspired us to learn about where we each get our information. So, that's something nice about the song! |

Closed minded vegans like yourself are forcing their children into their way of life and killing them. It's child abuse and I will NEVER condone it. Ask ANY doctor. They will tell you that nothing is a substitute for dairy when it comes to your childs intake of calcium. The article you posted from the Harvard School of Public Health suggests alternatives such as bok choy, soy milk and baked beans. What they don't tell you is that a ten year old would need to eat 1.9 litres of bok choy or a litre of baked beans to get the daily recommendation of calcium in comparison to just under 3 glasses of milk. These "alternatives" are not good enough. Unless of course you're feeding them a litre of baked beans or 1.9 litres of bok choy per day which I highly doubt vegan parents do. The vegan diet (when forced upon children) is unhealthy and extremely dangerous. Unless your kid is lactose intolerant you better be feeding them some ****ing dairy. |

In answer to your first comment above, though, I would say that supplements, far from being foolish, are often a prudent way for anyone to ensure sufficient vitamin and mineral intake. As I wrote earlier, the U.S. fortifies cow's milk (and cereals) with vitamin D as a way to combat rickets, and the synthetic vitamin D does the job (albeit with some overdose risks). In answer to your second comment, you can indeed find doctors, such as Dr. Neal Bernard of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, who state that milk products are not the best source of calcium in the diet. Dr. Bernard, M.D., is a nutrition researcher and an adjunct associate professor of medicine at the George Washington University School of Medicine and the head of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, which writes that: Quote:

Of course dairy can be harmful. Everything can be harmful. As I already said to much of any one thing can damage your health. You need to eat a variety of things. Ruling out an entire food group or concentrating yourself on only one is both idiotic and harmful to your health. Orange Juice is the closest thing to a "good alternative" to dairy. But it still isn't good enough.
As for that "doctor" I'm sure his opinion has nothing to do with the people paying his wage  Notice how all the scientists rant about how much better organic food is for you and it's about twenty times as expensive. Notice that when the sales of dark chocolate were falling scientists suddenly proved that it was good for your heart and the sales went back up again. Meh... We haven't strayed off topic at all as this is exactly what Immortal Technique was rapping about. Closed minded vegans who push their lifestyle onto others. I just hope your stupidity doesn't result in the death or ill health of your children. |

I don't think the mods are on the rap forums all that often.
My mom is vegan, and my dad is vegetarian. My aunt is also vegan. None of them have "pushed" their lifestyle onto me in anyway. Sounds like Captain Awesome could use a little more real world expireance, and less time cooped up getting his info from diss raps. |
He's talking about the song's topic (ie. Closed-minded Vegans/Vegetarians). I doubt him/her ever said that ALL vegans were closed-minded, but congratulations for knowing some who aren't; However, that doesn't make it everyone so lucky.

On a completely unrelated point, I think that's why some musicians prefer to perform with masks on- it creates a difference in-between the "you" that does the shopping and the "you" that does the rapping. |

I agree with you, though, t3hplatyz0rz, that musicians are free to play with the persona they want to have during a song. Trying to figure out the real viewpoint of a singer is fun for me. The actual meaning behind the ostensible meaning of a song is not always clear. And sometimes there is no meaning. I like your description of how some (many?) musicians want to create a difference between the person who "does the shopping" and the person who "does the rapping." I guess I have simplistically assumed that with Immortal Technique, his shopper self is the same as his rapper self. But hey, for all I know, maybe the guy is a vegan pretending to not like vegans who comment on his food choices! ;) Now *that* would be interesting. |
*Bump*
I've been listening to a lot of Immortal Technique recently. Machismo aside, he's probably one of the best hip hop artists out right now; politically and musically. If you haven't listened to his newest album (2008, not really new), it's called The Third World. I recommend the songs "Hollywood Drive By," "Reverse Pimpology," and "Open Your Eyes." Good stuff! |
Man, what happened to this thread, and where were the mods on this one?
Trauma, do you like any of his older stuff? |
That first question is fantastic.
Yes, I like all of his work, for the most part. I first got really into him about four years ago, before he released The Third World. I think his music's had a good progression. I saw him live many months ago, and he was just as good live. Though... the machismo of him and his crew kills me. |
Yeah, when I saw them a couple of years ago, they tried to fight someone in the audience within the first 15. Not cool.
|
It's funny this thread popped up because I was just listening to Immortal Technique yesterday for the first time in a while. I only have one of his albums. I mostly enjoy it but I do find him annoyingly preachy at times. And for a guy who calls himself "immortal technique" his rapping is pretty hit-or-miss.

Yeah, he can be kinda cheesy sometime, huh? Delivery doesn't flow so well sometime. I hate that he's so ****y, too.

I finally got around to listening to his new album The Martyr (2011) which makes me feel kind of bad that I waited so long. Usually I have to be in the right mood for Tech, he can be a little too abrasive and in-your-face at times, and sometimes I think he could use a lesson in respecting other peoples' choices (such as vegetarianism), but you can't deny that he is at least real and that's admirable.
The Martyr isn't Revolutionary Vol. 3 but it's just as good and may as well be. Tech has REALLY stepped on on his flow on this album, meaning he actually has some. His old style was more just along the lines of stomping over the beat like it was about to catch fire, but on The Martyr he really shows off his chops. He's also calmed down at least in his delivery. Now he's still abrasive but more in an academic way, or reserved or something. Basically he's the same guy but a bit more refined, however some songs feel like the spiritual successors on his earlier albums. It's a very political album and with the recent rise of movements across the world this year, he touches on all of them. This is probably his most accessible album too, so if you've heard his name and heard some of his earlier songs but weren't really drawn in, give this one a try. Should anybody feel inclined to grab this album, he released it as a free download from Viper Records. http://viperrecords.com/index.php/ar...rtal-technique |
I felt that the a wise choice was made on The Martyr to make the album collaboration-heavy, because despite being a fan of Tech's I feel that sometimes he doesn't move far enough from the same tried and tested methods.
Easily, this could have been another preachy collection of tracks with Tech calling out a variety of political regimes and over-excessively spewing the terms 'revolution' and 'conspiracy' However, I think because of the different styles used by co-artists on some of the tracks it avoids being more of the same, and dare I say innovative when compared to some of his past work. Would have to also agree with Pete's above point about Tech focusing less upon mutli-syllable words and more upon trying to actually create some sort of flow with his rhymes, which again helps differentiate his latest effort from past issues. However, in stating this, I didn't feel there were any stand-out tracks as opposed to his previous Revolutionary Volumes and Third World releases. |

Listening to 'The Martyr' and can point it it's nothing short of phenomenal.
Albeit, I wish he'd integrate some new themes in. Covers a lot of the same ground as the other album I heard 'The 3rd World'. Still, fantastic listen. |
I think a lot more leans towards the production than just the political legitimacy. One could say it's pretty typical hip-hop fair, but very VERY few hip hop aritsts can achieve his level of intensity.

first post outside of the punk and metal sections just for this dude. "bangers freestyle" is badass. good to see theres still intellect in rap since public enemy, too bad its all underground

He's been teasing the release of an album entitled "The Middle Passage" for the better part of a decade.
He 'recently' collaborated with R.A. The Rugged Man, but it has yet to be released by either artist. |
