i think de la influenced hip-hop alot though, but in different way, dre and nwa brought out a completely differnent side of hip-hop. chuck d of public enemy speaks of de la being the 'most influecial hip-hop group of the last 20 years'. public enemy, de la soul and groups like that put hip-hop in a good direction whereas dre, nwa decided to push their musical message as what chuck d descibes as 'nigga nigga nigga self degrading stuff,' he describes this as a easy way out for artists, whereas bands like public enemy pushed it in a better direction, more intelligent rap. |

The rap acts of today could learn a lot from Public Enemy, all they ever did was tell the truth and everyone listened.People were not used to receiving a whole lot of information in that particular time period, you could learn more about black history on a Public Enemy album than what was ever taught in a classroom |

Nas was on a totally differently level when writing Illmatic. Only a couple other times in Hip Hop History has someone gotten into that kind of a zone. Illmatic is the epitome of a hip hop album, if you dont like it, or at least respect it, you dont like Hip Hop.
Years after Illmatic dropped, Nas said in an interveiw that he couldn't even beleive some of the sh*t he spit on that record. NOw thats some sh*t right there. And to go along with the best street/gritty/New York style rhymes ever layed down, were some of the best beats, from the best producers on the planet. Its pretty safe to say that your favourite artists, favourite album, is probably Illmatic
