That's an unbelievably good observation. Personally, I only own Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables, all their mid-to-late 80s releases really have no appeal to me.

jesus 01-29-2005 05:04 PM

Fresh Fruit was my first punk album

Fenixpunk 01-29-2005 05:20 PM

its all about bedtime for democracy

My first DK album was...frankenchrist.

The Official Dead Kennedys/Jello Biafra Thread

I was just downloading some mp3's and I came across a collection of Jello. I had a really good laugh at some things, like "your children could end up like Charles Manson with too much exposure to the Smurfs" and "Barney the Dinosaur has been accused of supporting homosexuality, now I know why the dinosaurs died off"
But in one instance, he mentioned that we need to grow more pot...for reasons such as, with one acre of pot, as opposed to an acre of trees, we will have more paper, and then grow another crop months later...even the american flag and Levis was once made with hemp...lol, and yet we have it made illegal? I just had to make a thread for anyone who has never listened to "outspoken words" they should give it a spin....

I fought the law 02-01-2005 12:29 PM

Hah, yeah Jello is a great speaker. "Ban Everything" is my favorite of all his speeches, it's so funny.

hookers with machineguns 02-01-2005 02:16 PM

As a side note to your comment, hemp and marijuana are from the same plant species, but most often are not the same substance. industrial hemp, used to make fibers, clothes, paper, and a clean-burning fuel, have low THC content and is virtually unusable in the recreational sense. Hemp- meaning the roots, stalk, stems, etc- are actually legal to possess. Of course you cant technically grow hemp without producing the marijuana buds, but there is a DEA loophole that does allow certain companies to grow legal hemp, without the buds. I know, that was a totally unnecessary rant.
anyway back to subject, i never really cared much about jello's spoken word/extremism propaganda. To believe he actually ran for mayor several years ago in SanFran and was a Green party candidate in 2000. ..

I am a pot advocate, so yes I do know the process, and the growing habits of hemp and pot. I know you can't get high off hemp, and I do know about the loopholes. I did a project on it for gr 12 english hahahah . But, you don't like Jello, fine by me, I never knew he ran for mayor though...that is pretty funny... :tramp:

hookers with machineguns 02-02-2005 07:43 AM

I never said I didnt like Jello, musically I like alot about him. The first couple DK albums, all the other projects like NO WTO combo, LARD, jello & the Melvins, jello/DOA, even the country stylings of jello & mojo nixon. I just don't necessary care about his "politics."

Fenixpunk 02-02-2005 09:08 AM

Jellos "grow more pot" spoken word is great, Im all for the re-legalization of marijuana and have read quite a few books the subject. Some of the stuff listed already here is just the tip of the iceberg. I own a copy of The Emperor Wears No Clothes by Jack Herer and have read it several times from cover to cover..tons of information on everything from how it can be used as a fuel to why it became illegal in the first place, and how it can reverse the effects of global warming. I definetly recommend picking it up. www.jackherer.com

Which makes it such a shame that by the mid 80s they were having to write songs about MTV & giving posters away with their albums full of male genitalia for shock value.

Late DK lyrics are just a political as early ones. Even on Fresh fruit they had a political songs like stealing peoples mail and funco land at the beach. I dont think there lyrical style or approach changed much. Not much at all changed about the Dead Kennedys music. I think they may have become more rythm orientated and a more rounded band musicly but thats about it.

Anarchy doll 03-18-2005 09:09 AM

the lyrical content changed with the times...new issues, new protests....

All_Nite_Dinah 03-18-2005 04:28 PM

new issues new protests

same witty cynciscm and sarcasm

All_Nite_Dinah 03-18-2005 04:35 PM

sorry for the double post but anyway

The point I was trying to get across is the fact that DK never strayed entirley away from there politcal roots, never even got close to doing it. Like you say new issues arised. At the time MTV get off the air wasnt just another anti mtv song it was THE anti-mtv song. MTV was new, its not like today when its an everyday punk song topic, it was fresh and original. Times changed, difgferent mindless trends developed and the DKs took them on. Unfortunetly these trends overcame the band in the end.

As for the penis landscape thats part of what 80's hardcore was. Again you have to refer to the time frame. Its not like today when you see a kid with a mohawk or a **** bush shirt walk down the street and you dont bat an eye. Back then this was something unique and extrordinary. The penis lanscape was more than a piece of shock rock leeking into the hardcore scene. It was practicly a metafor for the entire movement(in my opinion). Something that is entirley vulgar and disgusting to people on the outside but to the inquisitive(and strong stomached) it was a piece of art. Just anopther thing that a hardcore kid would understand but not an adult at the time. The idea that they were just using it to sell albums is pretty much bunk as anyone who acctually listens to the dead kennedys lyrics could tell you.

Anarchy doll 03-18-2005 06:23 PM

hey at least I'm witty and not a know it all

All_Nite_Dinah 03-19-2005 08:57 AM

I love how when it all boils down whoever voices an opinion that deffers from a few selected people on here they are considered a know it all a dumb ass or just subject to ridicule. Story of my life, a minority amongst minorities.

That's Anarchy Doll's response to anyone that says anything remotely true, "you're a know-it-all!" Am I the only one that finds it odd that knowing alot about a subject can be turned around into an insult?

Anarchy doll 03-19-2005 01:50 PM

wasn't trying to insult, was just shooting back....did you see the previous sarcasm? new issues...new protests?

damn people, BEDTIME FOR DEMOCRACY!!

All_Nite_Dinah 07-21-2005 10:46 AM

In god we trust

I didnt like the Mutiny on the bay live cd at all. It was like 50 minuites long and it just wasnt what I was expecting for a live DK cd.

Fenixpunk 07-21-2005 10:51 AM

ya, i heard something about the mutiny cd about how jello didnt want to release it, that the recordings were crap, but the rest of the band outvoted him, or some **** like that.

All_Nite_Dinah 07-21-2005 12:22 PM

The sound quality and stuff wasnt to bad, but they baisically took out all the fun parts of live cds like all the ambient noise and they jumped around from gig to gig so the conversation you did get sucked. Its just kind of a bad boring cd

Chicken And Waffuls 09-05-2005 04:15 PM

Jello Biafra

Jello Biafra was the lead singer of the Dead Kennedys. He is no longer with the band. Alot of my friends say they would not see the Dead Kennedys because Jello Biafra is not with them anymore. I think they are a bunch of ARTARDS. Jello Biafra makes the band 100 times better but i would still go to see them.

would you guys see them?
DISCUSS PUNX........

sleepy jack 09-05-2005 06:10 PM

No.

They jacked up ticket prices for one.

SATCHMO 09-05-2005 06:12 PM

No. I would (and have) rather go see Jello do a lecture somewhere

sleepy jack 09-05-2005 06:13 PM

Jello's lectures are fun.

deadkennediespunk 09-06-2005 05:29 PM
