you have a point!

singing isn't really that important in punk . the worse a punk singer is the better actually by punk standards.

Dude, X-Ray Spex ring a bell? I get that you aren't sexist, but there are in fact good female punk singers. The chick from Le Tigre is awesome, as well as Siouxsie Sioux, Debbie Harry (obviously), and other stuff like Au Pairs, and holy crap how could I forget PATTI ****ING SMITH. Not angry, just realizing how awesome these women are. :)

Zer0 04-16-2011 03:52 PM

Some of my favourites:

Kat Bjelland of Babes In Toyland. Her voice sends shivers down my spine

Kathleen Hanna of Bikini Kill. Awesome voice.

Exene Cervenka of X. I love her voice, she sounds as cool and as sexy as hell.

The singer from Woah Hunx is rad.

Liljagare 04-23-2011 01:07 AM

Nina Hagen has to be one of my favorites. She just has an amazing range in her voice, from opera-like highs to very low rumbles. Even her current gospal songs are not too shabby. If I ever wanted to read or write a biography on one punk female singer, it would have to be her. She just seems to have led such an interesting life and was very much involved from the beginnings of punk rock. I think she kind of enjoys playing with mixing different genre's in her music to test her range (You can see this in "New York, New York") but if you consider punk being more an additude, she was extremely punk in doing so.

I always liked her redoing of Rammsteins's "Seemann". Personally I think she looks amazing as well, considering she was almost 50 when she sang this live (and still pretty much looks the same today).

princessophillia 04-30-2011 05:33 PM

Still love Joan Jett!

kersed 05-01-2011 06:19 PM

Jess from 1905.

Her voice is so sweet but when she gets aggressive, her vocal chords go through the roof. It's amazing.

Rarufu 05-05-2011 09:13 PM

I think avril lavigne is better

BastardofYoung 05-08-2011 10:59 PM

the OP should of said "I do not mean to sound sexist..... but I am" cause the whole statement is quite sexist.

these 3 songs come to mind right away, and feature excellent female vocals.

could post stuff from the likes of: Wendy O. Williams, Lydia Lunch, L7 and more... but I think those 3 videos will do.

What the **** about Brody Dalle - she sings punk, and kicks ass!

BastardofYoung 05-11-2011 10:22 AM

Brody would be alright to me, if she didn't spend all of her time trying to be Courtney Love.

I disagree - if you've listened to the Distillers' first albums, it's quite obvious that it's punk, and not as boring as **** as Courtney Love and Hole ...

AlexLloydDoran 05-11-2011 03:06 PM

girl from paramore! hot!

naw. I listened to my share of both bands. Hole made great albums, forgetting about that last turd she dropped under the Hole name, which which actually a solo album anyways she just put the name on to sell more to people who wanted a new Hole album.

"Pretty on the Inside" was a good album, much in the style of noise rock, which owed more to bands like Sonic Youth than it did to the grunge movement of that time. It may be a tad bit dated now, but it is good none the less.

"Live Through This" is a good album as well, not much else to say on it, but it is still a good listen to this day.

"Celebrity Skin" is my favorite, a more mature album, with a good pop sensibility to it. "Northern Star", "Dying" and "Best Sunday Dress" (found on Japanese import version) are some of the best stuff they have done.

Hole was a great band, just a shame Courtney will always be remembered as the wife of Kurt Cobain, before she is remembered as the frontwoman of Hole in many peoples eyes.

But Brody basically is no more than a Courtney Love wannabe, following in her footsteps. What she did with Tim Armstrong was no different than what Courtney did with Kurt Cobain, used his name to further her own and get more exposure for herself.

I'm not thinking about the way they portray themselves, but how they sing and what kind of music they produce - and in this case the two bands are definitely not the same. The Distillers is more punk-ish whereas Hole can be considered as grunge ... not the same thing. I like both bands but they're not the same in my opinion.

Miss Bang Bang 05-12-2011 01:38 AM

The girls from CIVET kick ass - but that's more of a mix between punk and punk rock.

BastardofYoung 05-12-2011 10:28 AM

Grunge is not a style, no matter what is said. Grunge was a term used by critics to define a style that was to differet for them to fit into one style. Even people in Seattle hated that term and how it was used. Grunge was no more than Punk Rock mixed with Sludgey Metal... Kinda like Sex Pistols meets Black Sabbath. It it's core "Grunge" was another type of punk rock. Listen to Green River, Mudhoney, Fluid or Blood Circus to name a few. Very much inspired by Punk Rock.

The two are not that different. Hole may not have fit in with the bands mentioned above.. but they still do owe a lot to punk rock.

Come on, everything about Distillers is just Hole worship. Even Brody's voice sounds almost just like Courtney most of the time.

Joan Jett. Nuff said.

TheFolkslave 06-22-2011 04:51 PM

Katri from the now defunct finnish hardcore band Rakkaus (Love eng.) is pretty nice.

also the vocalist of swedish crust band Worst Case Scenario sounds really good

Skelleus 06-30-2011 04:24 AM

I can't really name one good punk singer male of female. Punk is not about the quality of the singer but the message.

Saddest-Of-All-Keys 07-16-2011 03:01 PM

I know who's the best looking

<<<<<<<<<<<<

Dulce 07-28-2013 01:04 AM

Theo from the Lunachicks
Gwen Stefani of No Doubt
Brody the Distillers
Avril Lavigne :D

Ozthemonkey 07-28-2013 01:10 AM

How about The Runaways ? they're not exactly punk rock , but the way the vocalist sings is pretty punk isn't it ?

Someday 04-15-2014 02:10 PM

I just don't understand eather why the f**k Avril Lavigne comes up in this thread? She does so commercial music so far from punk...

I totally agree with Eltiraaz:

Quote:

Some of you should listen to some of the old Riot Girl stuff from the Seattle/Washington area in the Mid-ninties. To anyone who doesn't know Riot Girl isnt a band but almost a hardcore punk subgenre or "scene" that was all based on feminism and empowerment. Some of it is really original and inspiring. Some good female punk singers come from bands like:

Stella Mars
Erase Errata
Sleater Kinney
Pretty Girls Make Graves (If you want to consider them punk more than Indie)
__________________
Plus i'll add a non exhaustive sample of bands:

- Bikini Kill (...from Olympia, hehe love them and yes i know, i know, the band is already mentionned in this thread...)

-The Gits (just listen to Mia's voice and how she was powerful dude)

-7 Year Bitch (one of my favorites!)

-Babes in Toyland (hear the singer damn scream)

-L7 (from CA, just mythic)

-Amy Miret

-Hole (even if i don't really like Courtney Love but her voice is more than well)

-Bratmobile

-Lunachicks (one other mythic band)

-Free Kitten (if you like Kim Gordon as i do)

-Brody Dalle

-Queen Adreena

-Otep Shamaya (out of the tread, right?)

-Joan Jett!!

and blablabla...What about Patty Smith, Nina Hagen etc?

I just think/feel/believe and at first hear that women punk singers are so amazing as well as men can sing. Hella equal and for some of them (a lot) even better...

So is my opinion.
