What does Punk Fashion mean to you?

Hi everyone,
I've just joined this forum to ask a question about a university project about punk fashion and how different people interpret that. If you have the time, I'd love to hear what to you defines the look of punk (if anything!), maybe a particular era or style or just the attitude that one wears their clothes with. Any input is much appreciated, I just want to get as many thoughts as possible on the subject. Thanks in advance!

punks can look all kinds of ways, i think, but what i associate w the fashion specifically is resourcefulness and accessibility! a lot of common elements are diy and thrifted! patches made out of paint and old t-shirts! and everything is customized to the person by the person! : ) that doesn't mean you can't buy from big brands to be punk though afaik!

As Ghoulway say customization is a rally important thing in clothing in the punk scene. However, the least punk thing you can do with your clothes is to write "punk" on it. If you do that you're just a show off.

Punk to me is ironic. It tries to lay claim to ideals that they are (by and large) not particularly good at pursuing or upholding. In order to look punk, I guess you look at how other punks look and then you try to conform to that.

I live on Saint Marks Place in Manhattan, New York ( I would hyperlink to more info about Saint Marks Place, but I’m a new user :p: — UPDATE: added links :) — ), and have for the past three years. I have always come to this street though ever since I was a young teen, and punk fashion has always been a cornerstone in my life because of it. Search & Destroy was the first place I ever bought studded wristbands — and boy did I think I was hot **** with those things on!

This is the street where the original Manic Panic opened its doors in 1977. It’s the place where you will find the apartment building that is featured on the cover of Led Zeppelin’s 1975 album, Physical Graffiti. The home base for rebels in the City of New York, and the birthplace of American Punk Rock.

In adulthood, I didn’t want to be far from it, so I moved in and plan on being here for the rest of my days. Wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.

So what does punk fashion mean to me? A whole lot! I’ll tell ya that much. :)

The real irony is punk has been adapted into mainstream fashion. On a regular day I’ll see people with bright colored hair, facial piercings, doc martins, biker jackets, t shirts of bands they’ve never heard. All style and no substance - music videos that push the look even further.
It’s a paradox - it’s so normal, it’s as if punk never happened.
