There music is drawn from many different sources, this is true.
Id say they are definately a punk band. They were there right at the beginning of the punk movement and they referred to themselves as a punk band.
Punk has changed over the years and looking back, they dont seem so punk.
Id classify them as one of the most versatile punk bands ever, which is one of the reasons they are so popular.

i am entiled to MY opinion. my opinion is the clash were oriented around a money making ethic. they wouldnt know punk if dlck lucas rubbed his bellend under their eye lids
