Question IYO, Who Is The Definitive Proto-Punk Band?

which band sounded the most "punk" before punk was even a thing?

to me, The Electric Eels sounded the most "punk". they just had the snottiness & nihilism that a lot of the harder edged garage bands (that often get labeled proto-punk) lacked.

best? most influential? or your criteria here of "sounds the most like popular 70's punk"?

Velvet Underground seem indisputably the most important

while Stooges seem most defining of what it was to be punk before CBGB

what I mean is who sounded the most "punk" (what we've come to know as the punk rock sound) before punk existed?

Well then The Stooges pretty obviously.

I think there are worse things than wanting to rep the Electric Eels.
