I'd have to agree with you on the vocals. Monotonous screaming does nothing for me. Usually a couple of songs into an album and it's like oh you're one of those bands.

I like both types of vocals. It's just two different moods to me.

I'm certainly starting to get tired of certain metal clichés. A quick way to turn me off any metal act these days is any sort of growled, screamed vocals.
I want actual singing to be back in vogue for the genre.

If bad vocals are a pariah in metal, it's even worse if it flows over the edges and into other genres too.

Spoiler for (Hidden to help page run smoother):

I should probably make it clear that I like some bands that have metal growls/screeching/etc. It's just that these days, I find 99.99% of all band that do that to be very dull. Most vocalists do it so poorly that it gets old really damn fast!
Arkona, Nile, Dir En Grey... and maybe a few others on a good day. These are the only bands from which I accept and even enjoy that sort of vocal these days. I feel conflicted about Be´Lakor (Australian melodeath) because their music is so nice... while their cookie monster vocalist is just boring and even a bit silly to listen to. I kind of want to find music where I don't have to tune part of it out to enjoy it.

Masha (Arkona) and Kyo (Dir En Grey) are probably the only extreme vocalists that I really, truly respect and admire. Mike Patton dabbles in screams and other histrionics too on a very rare occasion and he gets a pass as well.

To me, saying you don't like when bands use "those screamed or growled vocals" is like saying you don't like bands when bands use those six string guitars. It's such a massive spectrum of styles that it's pretty ignorant to lump them all together like that.

Exactly. Pretending that this small difference suddenly makes it not screaming is half the problem.
