It definitely isn't. Bands these days tend to go either poppy with some rawness or abrasive and dark. The in betweens I've mentioned for here are in the minority.

On another note, Ceremony probably my favorite regular modern hardcore band. I prefer that minor threat inspired style over beatdown inspired ones anyday.

A lot of the time when I hear about "modern hardcore" it sounds more like a mixture of metal and *ahem* pop punk

Turnstile does that better than anyone since kid dynamite IMO. Minor Threat and a lot of early hc bands stuck to a pretty concise rock n roll verse chorus structure which realistically is the same as pop.

Mondo Bungle 09-19-2017 07:04 PM

i mean i get where you're coming from but i think you're either basing that off of a small sample size or just outright wrong. there's definitely a lot of metal influence in the heavier stuff and i guess there's some pop punk elements in melodic hardcore but it's not all that often that i hear the two overlap. i can't think of many bands that i would call both pop punk and hardcore, at least not many that belong in this thread.

on that note:

Night Birds

High octane hardcore punk with some surf punk influence sprinkled in good for good measure cause why the **** not?

Having a go at this record. Don't let me down Q I swear to god.

Very true, and I'll admit I can't wait to hear it again. How the fuck do you find these bands and I struggle trying to find anything new at all? Punk or not?

Take off your scarf and strangle yourself with it while masturbating and I assure you you will see the stars of modern hardcore.
