I was more talking about attitude. I mean like Blink 182 isn't punk because they don't have attitude. Please go in the next room and fap to the Sex Pistols.

We're talking about punk so it's he/she/they/it/non-denominational gender says.

Anyways ignoring the people who want to define punk as some sort of artistic lifestyle credo that spawns many genres and goes back to the 60' garage rock...
because it wasn't, it's f'n white kids in the 80's who listened to the Sex Pistols and Black Flag!!! sure there is always those bands out there like No Means No that do stuff a little differently, but for me, the progressive sound in youth culture music usually means a genre is its way out. Hardcore in the 80's was awesome, all these bands with raw aggression and simple beats, and then it started to get redundant so the 90's was dominated by post hardcore, and with the exception of a few bands like the Jesus Lizard, it was some nasty $hit! Same thing with rock, from the Rolling Stones to Journey, and now I'm seeing hip hop running a similar course. |

Punk as a cultural movement is dead, as it should be, 1976 happened 40 years ago. If the Sex Pistols were to try to break out in 2016 no one would care. The technology, economy, and cultural and racial demographics of London have changed so much that bands like Siouxsie and the Banshees parading around in their swastikas would be confined to the dust bin within minutes. Punk rock itself was a counter movement against the dominance of commercial rock, which is now dead, and the record industry itself is dying. You can label any other genre, 8 bit techno, hip hop, garage rock punk if you like, but it's not. It's something completely different that belongs to the generation of its time. Cultures are always in flux, musical genres and fashions come and go, if they didn't we'd all still be wearing top hats and doing the Irish jig. My musical collection is quite extensive thank you very much. |

People saw my previous post so I am not even going to counter argue other than saying...The Sex Pistols caused the counter culture implosion we now know as punk that eventually became commercialized in the 90's under Green Day, and is now no longer relevant.
Sure there are still small pockets of punk scenes in North America just like there are jazz or metal scenes, but its heyday has come and gone. With the music industry at its death thralls I doubt we'll ever see another musical counter culture revolution, technology and culture has changed so much, music has taken a back seat to other forms of cultural expression. |
