Okay, to me it's like that:
First EPs and singles combined into 1,039 Smoothed Out Slappy Hours plus Kerplunk phases, punk.
Dookie, pop punk.
Insomniac to Warning, lame pop punk.
From then on, that thing right there.

To me the punkest thing Green Day has ever done is this cover version for Husker Du's.

They were definitely a punk band from 39/smooth thru Dookie.

They started to go alternative with Insomniac and by Nimrod I had stopped caring

Pop punk which is a pretty feeble mutation IMHO, but it sells better and is fun so who can blame them.
Same with the mutation of the proper UK industrial sound into Industrial metal, nowhere near the same thing but they can make a living out of it.

Punk aesthetic but just slightly edgy pop rock at this point. Maybe their earlier stuff was pop punk, from that Gilman scene. But bands evolve, their sound changes over time. I don't think Green Day or any other band is trying to force themselves into any particular genre.

I'll check that dictionary, but in the meantime I'm impressed - as is everyone else in the world - by your eloquence, obvious accomplishments and success, and the evidence of your blazingly high intelligence.
