Okay, to me it's like that:
First EPs and singles combined into 1,039 Smoothed Out Slappy Hours plus Kerplunk phases, punk. Dookie, pop punk. Insomniac to Warning, lame pop punk. From then on, that thing right there. Pop punk which is a pretty feeble mutation IMHO, but it sells better and is fun so who can blame them.
Same with the mutation of the proper UK industrial sound into Industrial metal, nowhere near the same thing but they can make a living out of it. |

Punk aesthetic but just slightly edgy pop rock at this point. Maybe their earlier stuff was pop punk, from that Gilman scene. But bands evolve, their sound changes over time. I don't think Green Day or any other band is trying to force themselves into any particular genre.
