I kinda realized that the only reason i liked greenday in the first place was becuz of familiarity. Becuz mtv played basket case and when i come around all the time and while i admit they can make a catchy tune or 2. I dont replay any Greenday tune and i cant honestly say ive heard a song from them that really moves me. |
I don't mind them never considered them to be all that punk. I read the wonderful book, Gimme something better by Boulware and Tudor about the Bay Area punk scene and I came away liking them much more.

I remember when Green Day hit the scene and thinking they wouldn't last long, lol. Not only did they stick around, but they've had quite an influence.

I'd throw them into the pop-punk bin, but yeah I'd say they fit under the big expansive umbrella of punk. I don't see much supporting otherwise that doesn't boil down to "because reasons!" or personal distaste.

Green Day is awesome, so many great albums and songs

Elph: doesn't believe in nationalism unless it's punk.

Yes they are pop punk but still punk.

Okay, to me it's like that:
First EPs and singles combined into 1,039 Smoothed Out Slappy Hours plus Kerplunk phases, punk. Dookie, pop punk. Insomniac to Warning, lame pop punk. From then on, that thing right there. To me the punkest thing Green Day has ever done is this cover version for Husker Du's. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yge4Rx_nPCk |
