I'd say up until and including 21st Century Breakdown they were punk enough (though still declining in quality. The trio is debatable as pop punk albums, I'd say just pop rock for most of it.

They were far more commercially successful than the Sex Pistols were, but that's because when Dookie came out punk had become safe and easily digestable for the masses.

And now it's irrelevant music, an urban youth culture fad that's now 40 years old.
