"Sell Out" is such a loosely defined phrase that it could be applied to anybody.

I call artists sell outs when they compromise their vision for sales because I understand their vision better than they do.

Pil is the one of most popular post punk bands that isn't Joy Division or the Talking Heads.

They're popular amongst music nerds so music nerds call them popular.

Anecdotal. There were ****loads of people there when I saw them in LA. I also think that being known as Johnny Rotten's serious band helps them out a lot. He's not exactly obscure.

You're an idiot. Of course you're going to see a disproportionate number of people who like a band at their ****ing concerts, especially in a city of 4 million people. You clearly haven't talked to a non-college student in years if you think anyone cares about PiL who isn't a music dork. I could take a walk right now, stop every single person I see, ask them if they know who PiL are, and be delightfully surprised if I found a single person who did.
